Continental Refrigerator Error Code E2: Ambient Probe Error

E2 means the ambient probe on the side of the electrical box has an error, so the auxiliary heaters do not operate and you may see condensation around the doors. Cooling is usually unaffected. Check the food with a thermometer, wipe the door frames and glass, and tell us the model number and when it started.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: cooling continues, but door heaters are off, so moisture builds around the doors.

What does Continental error code E2 mean?

A Continental reach-in with the easy electronic control, such as the 1RN, D2RN or 2RSN, has a small ambient probe on the side of the electrical box. It reads the temperature of the room air. The control uses that reading to decide when to run the auxiliary heaters, which warm the door frames and glass so moisture does not condense on them. If the control cannot read the probe, because the probe has failed, its plug has loosened or the input on the control has failed, it shows E2 and leaves the heaters off. The main cooling does not depend on this probe, so the cabinet usually keeps its temperature. What changes is the doors. Without heat, humid air meeting the cold frames turns into water, and you may see condensation or moisture around the doors, and a cabinet that works harder in humid air. The manual also notes that the frame heater circuits cannot work without the room air reading.

Affected models and control systems

This page covers Continental reach-in refrigerators with the easy electronic control, such as the 1RN, D2RN and 2RSN.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Display shows E2
  • Condensation or beads of water on door frames and glass
  • Door gaskets look wet and the cabinet works harder in humid weather

Possible causes

Listed in Continental's documentation

  • A failed ambient probe on the side of the electrical box
  • A loose plug on the probe lead at the control
  • A failed ambient probe input on the control
  • Door frame heater circuits that cannot work without the room air reading

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E2 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A probe knocked loose when the electrical box cover was opened and closed during cleaning
  • Grease or kitchen steam that has corroded the probe plug
  • A frame heater that has also failed, so wetness remains after the probe is fixed

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check the food with a thermometer, though cooling is usually unaffected.
  2. Wipe condensation from door frames and glass.
  3. Keep the doors closed as much as possible.
  4. Photograph any moisture on the frames for us, tell us the model number and note when it started. Keep the doors shut between uses.

How a technician diagnoses error code E2

  1. Read the code and confirm the cabinet temperature is normal.
  2. Inspect the ambient probe and its plug on the electrical box.
  3. Measure the probe resistance at room temperature.
  4. Check the control input and the frame heater circuits.
  5. Replace the probe or control only after the readings show which one has failed.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The probe sits at the electrical box, where line voltage is present.
  • Wet door frames left for long can damage gaskets and frames.
  • The frame heaters may also need their own testing with a meter.

How error code E2 differs from similar codes

E0 is the probe that controls cabinet temperature, E1 the probe on the evaporator coil. E2 affects only the door heaters.

E2Questions about Continental error code E2
Will the food spoil with E2 showing?

Usually not, since cooling is normal. Check with a thermometer to be sure.

Why is the glass sweating?

The frame heaters stay off without the room air reading, so moisture condenses on the cold surfaces.

Can I keep using the cabinet?

Yes, with the doors kept shut between uses. Wipe the moisture and call us.
