Federal Display Refrigerator Error Code E0: Air Probe Error
E0 on a Federal display refrigerator with a Carel control means the air temperature probe signal is interrupted or short-circuited. The alarm sounds, and the wrench button mutes it. Check that the probe wires and quick disconnect are secure, and call us if E0 stays.
High: with the air probe lost, the case temperature is not controlled and stored product is at risk.

What does Federal Industries error code E0 mean?
The air sensing probe tells the Carel control the cabinet air temperature. If the probe signal is interrupted (an open circuit) or short-circuited, the control cannot read a valid temperature and shows E0. On any error, an alarm sounds and the alarm indicator lights, and several codes can flash in turn on the display. Pressing the wrench button mutes the alarm, and the codes clear automatically once the problem is fixed. The manual's steps are to check that the probe wires and the quick disconnect are secure in the control, to check the probe resistance against its probe table, and to make sure the probes are wired per the wiring diagram. A reading of 0 ohm means checking the wiring insulation, an infinite reading means checking for breaks in the wiring, and the probe is replaced if other remedies fail or its resistance is off the table.
Affected models and control systems
Federal SSRC and ESSRC display refrigerators with a Carel control. The SSRPF and SSRVS use the same Carel error table.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E0 flashes on the display
- An alarm sounds and the alarm indicator lights
- The case temperature drifts from the set point
- Several codes may cycle on the display
Possible causes
Listed in Federal Industries's documentation
- Probe signal interrupted
- Probe signal short-circuited
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E0 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A probe wire pinched or cut where the case was cleaned or restocked
- A quick disconnect that is dirty or not fully seated
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press the wrench button to mute the alarm.
- Check the case temperature with a separate thermometer and protect the product if it is warming.
- Note any other codes that flash with E0.
- Do not unplug probes or open panels. Write down the model and codes, and call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code E0
- Read the code and note any other codes in the cycle.
- Check the probe wires and the quick disconnect at the control.
- Measure the probe resistance and compare it with the manual's probe table.
- If 0 ohm, check the wiring insulation; if infinite, check for breaks.
- Verify the probes are wired per the wiring diagram.
- Replace the probe if other remedies fail or the resistance is off the table.
- Probe wiring is tested at the control with the case powered down.
- Telling a damaged wire from a failed probe needs the resistance table and a meter.
- Product safety depends on the case temperature, which has to be confirmed after the repair.
How error code E0 differs from similar codes
E0 is the air probe, and E1 is the defrost (evaporator coil) probe. EE and EF are parameter reading errors.

Will E0 clear by itself?
The manual says codes clear automatically once the problem is fixed.
What does the wrench button do?
It mutes the alarm. It does not fix the cause.
Is my product safe?
Check the case temperature with a thermometer. If it is warming, move the product.
