Federal Display Refrigerator Error Code EF: Operating Parameter Error
EF on a Federal display refrigerator with a Carel control is an operating parameter reading error, with the same cause and remedy as EE. Correct abnormal conditions around the control. Replace the control if EF persists.
Medium: the case may keep running, but a control that cannot read its operating values needs attention.

What does Federal Industries error code EF mean?
EF is the sibling of EE. Where EE concerns the unit parameters, EF concerns the operating parameters, the values the control uses while the case is running. The manual gives the same cause and remedy for both: operating conditions outside the control's rated range, which is 14 to 122 F (-10 to 50 C) and less than 90 percent relative humidity, non-condensing. The remedy is to correct abnormal conditions, and if the problem persists, replace the control. As with other errors, an alarm sounds, the alarm indicator lights, and several codes can flash in turn. The wrench button mutes the alarm, and the codes clear automatically once the problem is fixed. If a case shows both EE and EF at the same time, that points even more strongly to the control or to its surroundings, rather than to a probe.
Affected models and control systems
Federal SSRC and ESSRC display refrigerators with a Carel control. The SSRPF and SSRVS use the same Carel error table.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- EF flashes on the display
- An alarm sounds
- EE may also appear
- The control sits near heat or moisture
Possible causes
Listed in Federal Industries's documentation
- Operating conditions outside the control's rated range
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EF on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A control placed where steam or spray from nearby cleaning reaches it
- A supply voltage dip that corrupted the operating values
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press the wrench button to mute the alarm.
- Check what sits near the control, such as hot equipment, steam or wet cleaning.
- Keep spray and steam away from the control.
- If EF stays, write down the model and codes, and call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code EF
- Read the code and any others in the cycle.
- Check the temperature and humidity at the control.
- Inspect the control for moisture.
- Check the supply voltage.
- Cycle the power and watch for a return.
- Replace the control if EF persists.
- Control replacement needs the right part and settings for the model, and the case is run through a full cooling cycle afterward to prove it holds temperature.
- Moisture inside a control can damage it further, so a technician checks for it before fitting a new one.
- Operating values are specific to the model, and the right ones are not something an operator can read off the display.
How error code EF differs from similar codes
EF is the operating parameter error and EE is the unit parameter error. They share one cause and remedy.

The manual gives them the same cause and remedy.
Can the case still cool?
It may, but the control is reporting a problem reading its values.
Does EF clear by itself?
The codes clear automatically once the problem is fixed.
