Continental Refrigerator Alarm AL: Low Temperature

AL on a Continental reach-in, roll-in, pass-thru or roll-thru unit means the cabinet is below the low alarm set point. The display alternates AL with the cabinet temperature and the control beeps. Press SET/MUTE to silence the beep.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: an overcooling warning; the unit keeps running and product is rarely at risk of spoiling.

What does Continental error code AL mean?

AL is the low temperature alarm on the electronic control of Continental reach-in, roll-in, pass-thru and roll-thru refrigerators, freezers and warmers. The control compares the cabinet temperature with an alarm threshold, which is parameter AL. When the cabinet is colder than that threshold, the display alternates AL with the actual cabinet temperature and the control beeps. The manual says that pressing SET/MUTE silences the beep. It does not list causes, and it does not explain what to do beyond silencing the sound. That is why the page cannot tell you what lowered the temperature. On a refrigerator, a cabinet colder than expected may be a setpoint that was changed, a probe reading low, or a compressor that runs too long. On a freezer the alarm limit sits below the normal operating range. Food in a too-cold refrigerator can freeze, so the product and the setpoint should be checked.

Affected models and control systems

AL is listed for Continental reach-in, roll-in, pass-thru and roll-thru refrigerators, freezers and warmers, in the Electronic Control Error Codes section printed on page 18, on the same page as the High and Low Temperature Alarms. The alarm threshold is parameter AL.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • AL alternating with the cabinet temperature
  • Beeping from the control
  • Product freezing in a refrigerator, or an unusually cold cabinet

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code AL on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Cabinet temperature below the low alarm set point (parameter AL)
  • Setpoint changed to a lower value
  • Cabinet probe reading colder than the air around the product
  • Relay or compressor control stuck on after a defrost

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Press SET/MUTE once to silence the beep, as the manual describes.
  2. Read the cabinet temperature that alternates with AL.
  3. Check with a separate thermometer to confirm it is really cold.
  4. Move any product that is freezing, if this is a refrigerator.
  5. Write down both temperatures and when AL started, for the technician.

How a technician diagnoses error code AL

  1. Read the alarm and compare the displayed temperature with a calibrated thermometer.
  2. Check the setpoint and the AL threshold parameters.
  3. Test the cabinet probe accuracy.
  4. Check that the compressor output cycles off at setpoint.
  5. Check defrost operation and the evaporator fan.
  6. Replace the probe or relay only after a failed test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Parameter changes need the control's access method and the unit's data.
  • Compressor relays and wiring carry line voltage.
  • A probe or relay that is stuck can lead to frozen product if not found.

How error code AL differs from similar codes

AL is the low alarm; AH on the same control is the high alarm. Both alternate with the cabinet temperature on the display.

ALQuestions about Continental error code AL
Can I keep using the unit after silencing the beep?

If the temperature is fine for the product, yes. Silencing only stops the sound; the alarm condition remains until the cabinet warms to the threshold.

Does AL clear on its own?

The alarm follows the temperature, so it should stop once the cabinet rises above the AL threshold.

Is AL a problem for food?

In a refrigerator, yes, if items freeze. In a freezer it may be less critical.
