Continental Refrigerator Alarm AH: High Temperature

AH on a Continental reach-in, roll-in, pass-thru or roll-thru unit means the cabinet is above the high alarm set point. The display alternates AH with the cabinet temperature after a preprogrammed delay. Press SET/MUTE to silence the beep and check the door and product.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the cabinet is above its high alarm limit, so stored food may be at risk.

What does Continental error code AH mean?

AH is the high temperature alarm on the electronic control of Continental reach-in, roll-in, pass-thru and roll-thru units. The alarm threshold is parameter AH. When the cabinet temperature rises above that threshold, and stays there past a preprogrammed delay, the display alternates AH with the actual cabinet temperature and the control beeps. The manual says SET/MUTE silences the beep. The delay is there so that a door opening or a loading of warm product does not set it off at once. The manual lists no causes for AH and gives no steps other than the silencing key. Since the control only compares temperature with a limit, the cause could be anything that stops the cabinet from cooling: air leaking in at the door, a blocked condenser, an iced evaporator or a stopped compressor. For a refrigerator, food safety depends on how warm the cabinet got and for how long.

Affected models and control systems

AH is listed for Continental reach-in, roll-in, pass-thru and roll-thru refrigerators, freezers and warmers, in the Electronic Control Error Codes section printed on page 18, on the same page as the High and Low Temperature Alarms. The alarm threshold is parameter AH. On a warmer unit, the alarm refers to that unit's own temperature range.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • AH alternating with the cabinet temperature
  • Beeping from the control
  • Cabinet feeling warm to the touch

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code AH on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Cabinet temperature above the high alarm set point (parameter AH) beyond the preprogrammed delay
  • Door open or gasket worn, letting kitchen air in
  • Condenser coil covered in grease or dust, reducing cooling
  • Evaporator iced over after a defrost that did not clear it

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Press SET/MUTE once to silence the beep.
  2. Close the door fully and clear anything holding it open.
  3. Check the cabinet temperature on the display and with a separate thermometer.
  4. Move perishable food to another cooler if the temperature stays above the AH value.
  5. Write down the temperature shown and how long AH has been on, for the technician.

How a technician diagnoses error code AH

  1. Read the alarm and compare the display with a thermometer.
  2. Check door seals and gaskets.
  3. Check condenser and evaporator fans and airflow.
  4. Inspect the evaporator for ice and test defrost operation.
  5. Read refrigeration pressures if the system is weak.
  6. Replace parts only after the matching test fails.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Compressor and defrost circuits carry line voltage behind the panels.
  • Gauge readings on the sealed refrigerant circuit need trained handling.
  • Raising the AH threshold only hides the problem.

How error code AH differs from similar codes

AH is the high side of the temperature pair with AL, and it waits for a preprogrammed delay before showing.

AHQuestions about Continental error code AH
Is food safe if AH shows?

It depends on how warm the cabinet got and for how long. Check the temperature and discard food held too warm.

Does AH clear after I silence it?

No. SET/MUTE only silences the beep; AH stays until the temperature falls below the threshold.

Will AH come back after a door opening?

It can if the door stays open past the delay or the cabinet is slow to recover.
