Dean Fryer Error Code CM III.5: Heating, Over-Temp, Probe Circuit
On a Dean CM III.5 or digital controller, the three display messages mean a heating problem, an over-temperature, or a problem in the temperature measuring or control circuit. For over-temperature or a heating problem, turn the fryer off and call a technician.
High: over-temperature and heating problems in a fryer are safety conditions.
- Code
- CM III.5 / Digital Controller: three display messages (heating problem, over-temperature, temperature measurement/control circuit problem; shown as symbols in the PDF). Basket Lift Timer: HELP, HOT, and a circuit-problem message.

What does Dean error code CM III.5 mean?
The CM III.5 shows three messages, drawn as symbols in the manual. One indicates a heating problem. Another means the frypot is above 410 F (210 C), or 395 F (202 C) on CE fryers. The third means the computer found a problem in the temperature measuring circuits, including the probe. The Frymaster user's manual adds Basket Lift Timer messages: HELP for a heating problem and HOT for a frypot above 385 F (196 C), and for the Digital Controller an over-temperature threshold of 395 F (202 C), or 410 F (210 C) for CE fryers. The actions differ. For a heating problem, turn the fryer off and call the service hotline. For HOT, turn the fryer off immediately and contact a qualified servicer. For a measuring or control circuit problem, turn it off and contact a servicer. If the probe is suspected, compare the readout with a thermometer in the oil.
Affected models and control systems
Dean CM III.5 computer, plus the Basket Lift (Digital) Timer and the Digital Controller covered in the Frymaster controller user's manual. The temperature thresholds differ by controller.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- A heating problem symbol or HELP appears
- HOT or an over-temperature symbol appears
- A temperature measuring circuit symbol appears
- The oil is hotter or colder than the readout
Possible causes
Listed in Dean's documentation
- Problem in the temperature measuring circuits, including the probe
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code CM III.5 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A heating system that is not holding temperature in the oil
- A probe reading that does not match the oil
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the fryer off, and for HOT turn it off immediately.
- Do not move the fryer or the oil while it is hot.
- If the probe is suspected, compare the readout with a thermometer in the oil once it is safe.
- After an electrical storm or power fluctuation, unplug the cord and plug it back in. Then write down the message and call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code CM III.5
- Read the display and identify which of the three messages is shown.
- Compare the readout with a thermometer in the oil.
- Check the probe and the temperature measuring circuit.
- Check the heating circuit and its supply.
- Check the controller version and its thresholds.
- Repair the part that fails.
- Hot oil can cause severe burns, and the checks are made with the oil handled correctly.
- Heating and control circuit tests involve high-amperage mains or gas controls.
- Thresholds differ by controller and by CE or non-CE model.
How error code CM III.5 differs from similar codes
The thresholds differ by controller: CM III.5 410 F (395 F on CE fryers), Basket Lift Timer HOT 385 F, and Digital Controller 395 F (410 F on CE fryers).

We use the maker's document to read the code and do not reproduce it. Always confirm the complete model and control before applying these steps.
Are all three messages the same?
No. One is heating, one is over-temperature, and one is a measuring circuit problem.
What if the readout looks wrong?
Compare it with a thermometer in the oil.
What about electrical storms?
If the controller acts erratically after power fluctuations or storms, unplug the cord and plug it back in.
