Huebsch CHM495R Washer-Extractor Error Code Ed04: Locked Rotor
Ed04 on a Huebsch CHM495R washer-extractor is a locked rotor error: the motor did not reach speed at startup, so the drive concluded that the rotor could not turn and cut the current. Cut power at the machine's disconnect first, and after the lock releases check the basket for a wedged item. Do not run the machine again if the basket will not turn freely by hand.
High: the motor cannot turn and repeated attempts can overheat it.
What does Huebsch error code Ed04 mean?
At startup the drive expects the motor to accelerate. If the motor does not reach speed in the time allowed, the drive decides that the rotor is stuck and cuts the current to avoid burning the motor, then displays "Ed04". Operators see the machine hum or twitch and then stop. The manual's steps are to power down, verify the motor mounting and look for obstructions. A wedged item, a seized bearing or a loose motor mount can hold the rotor, and a weak motor or drive can cause the same result. The manual's list is obstructions in or behind the basket, motor mounting and alignment, the bearings and drive belt condition, and the motor and the drive. A motor that hums without turning is drawing heavy current, which is why the drive acts so quickly, and why repeated restarts only add heat to the motor.
Affected models and control systems
This page applies to CHM495R-family washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control and motor drive.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Machine hums or twitches, then stops
- "Ed04" on the display
- Basket hard to turn by hand with power off
Possible causes
Listed in Huebsch's documentation
- Obstruction in or behind the basket
- Motor mounting or alignment off
- Bearings or drive belt in poor condition
- Weak motor or drive
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed04 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A small item such as a belt buckle or a bundle of hangers lodged between the basket and the shell
- A drive belt that has loosened so the motor strains against a heavy wet load
Safe checks before calling for service
- Cut power at the machine's disconnect first.
- After the lock releases, check the basket for a wedged item, with power off.
- Do not run the machine again if the basket will not turn freely by hand.
- Call us to schedule service for the motor and mounts, and tell us whether you heard a hum.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed04
- Read the code and ask whether the basket moved at all.
- With power locked off, turn the basket by hand to feel for drag or binding.
- Inspect the motor mounts, alignment, belt and bearings.
- Measure motor winding resistance and current at start.
- Replace the bearing, belt, motor or drive only after the test.
- A motor drawing heavy current on a locked rotor can overheat within moments and needs to be tested with power controlled.
- Bearings, belts and motor mounts involve heavy parts that must be handled with the machine locked out.
- Telling a weak motor from a weak drive takes current and winding measurements.
How error code Ed04 differs from similar codes
Ed04 reports a rotor that never reached speed. Ed03 is a missing tach signal, and Ed08 is current above the drive's highest limit.

Related Huebsch washer error codes
Can I keep pressing start?
No. A motor held in place draws heavy current, and repeated tries only heat it.
Why check the basket by hand?
A wedged item or a seized bearing shows up as a basket that will not turn freely.
Is it always a stuck basket?
No. A weak motor or drive can give the same result.
