Kolpak Walk-In Cooler Alarm PRESSURE SENSOR: Suction Pressure Reading

PRESSURE SENSOR on a Kolpak walk-in's ArcticFox controller means the suction pressure sensor is shorted, open or reading out of range. Press ENTER to silence the alarm for 1 hour. It sounds again if the condition has not been corrected by then.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the controller may be working from a bad pressure reading, though the room may still be cooling.

What does Kolpak PRESSURE SENSOR mean?

The ArcticFox controller reads the pressure on the suction side of the refrigeration system and uses it with the suction temperature to work out superheat. If the signal from the pressure sensor is shorted, open or outside the range the controller expects, it raises the text alarm PRESSURE SENSOR in the Alarms menu. The manual describes the alarm that way and gives one operator action. Pressing ENTER on the display silences it for 1 hour while the condition is addressed, and the alarm sounds again if the system has not been corrected by then. The manual lists no causes beyond the three signal conditions and no other owner steps. Because pressure feeds the superheat calculation, a bad pressure reading can also lead the controller to raise the superheat alarms, but the manual does not say that, so treat it only as something a technician would look for.

Affected models and control systems

The manual covers the ArcticFox OEM Controller with Deluxe Display used on Kolpak walk-in coolers and freezers.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • PRESSURE SENSOR in the Alarms menu
  • Alarm sounding until ENTER is pressed
  • Room temperature drifting if the controller is working from a bad reading
  • Alarm returning an hour after being silenced

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind PRESSURE SENSOR on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Suction pressure sensor shorted
  • Suction pressure sensor open
  • Suction pressure reading out of range
  • Sensor cable damaged where it runs along the suction line or through the condensing unit housing
  • Connector or fitting loose at the sensor port
  • Real suction pressure outside the sensor's range because of a refrigeration problem

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Press ENTER on the display to silence the alarm for 1 hour.
  2. Check the walk-in's room temperature with a separate thermometer.
  3. Look at the door, the door gaskets and the product to make sure the room is holding.
  4. Do not touch the refrigeration fittings or cables.
  5. Call for service before the hour is up, and note the alarm text and the room temperature.

How a technician diagnoses PRESSURE SENSOR

  1. Read the Alarms menu and the live suction pressure value on the controller.
  2. Check the sensor wiring and connector for a short or an open circuit.
  3. Compare the controller's pressure reading with a gauge on the suction line.
  4. Check that the sensor output and supply voltage are correct at the controller.
  5. Replace the sensor if the gauge and the controller disagree, or fix the refrigeration problem if the pressure itself is out of range.
  6. Confirm the alarm clears and superheat reads normally.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Gauge readings need refrigerant gauges connected to the suction line, which is licensed refrigeration work.
  • Checking the sensor signal means testing powered controller terminals.
  • A real pressure problem points to the refrigeration system, not to the sensor.

How PRESSURE SENSOR differs from similar codes

This alarm is about the pressure sensor. SUCTION TEMP SENSOR is the temperature sensor on the same line, and HIGH and LOW SUPERHEAT are the calculated results.

Does pressing ENTER fix the alarm?

No. It silences it for 1 hour. The manual says the alarm sounds again if the system is not corrected by then.

What does out of range mean?

The sensor signal is outside the values the controller expects. The manual does not give the limits.

Is my walk-in still cooling?

It may be, but check the room temperature yourself while you arrange service.
