Nuova Simonelli Espresso Machine Error LEVEL ERROR: Boiler Water Level
LEVEL ERROR means the boiler did not refill to its working water level within 90 seconds, so the machine shut off the pump and heating. Check that the water supply is open and the filter is not blocked, then switch the machine off and on once. If the message returns, leave it off and call us.
High: the machine stops pumping and heating, and it will not make drinks until the water level is restored.

What does Nuova Simonelli LEVEL ERROR mean?
An espresso machine boiler has to stay filled to a set level, because a heating element working in a boiler that is short of water can overheat. The Aurelia II control gives the pump and fill valve 90 seconds to bring the level up. If the probe has not reported the right level by then, the control stops trusting the situation. The display flashes LEVEL ERROR, the pump is switched off, and the heating element and the other functions are halted. The machine is simply protecting the boiler until the level is restored. The check can fail for several reasons, so the message does not name a part. Water may not be arriving, the pump may be weak, the fill valve may not open, or the probe may misread a full boiler. A restart gives the control a fresh fill attempt, but it does not show which reason applies.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the Nuova Simonelli Aurelia II family in the Digit, V and S versions, as described in the Aurelia II User Handbook. Other Nuova Simonelli lines use different message lists.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The display flashes LEVEL ERROR
- The pump stops running and no water reaches the boiler
- The machine stops heating and loses steam and brew temperature
Possible causes
Listed in Nuova Simonelli's documentation
- Water supply to the machine closed or restricted, or a blocked filter
- Pump not building enough pressure
- Boiler level probe or its wiring not reporting the level
- Fill valve not opening
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind LEVEL ERROR on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Scale coating on the boiler level probe, so it reads dry when the boiler is full
- Water filter cartridge that has clogged since the last change and starves the pump on refill
- Supply line shut after plumbing work, or a kinked hose behind the machine
Safe checks before calling for service
- Confirm the water shut-off valve to the machine is fully open and the line is not kinked.
- Check the filter housing for a clogged cartridge or a closed filter valve.
- Switch the machine off at its main switch and on again, as the owner's manual lists. On the Aurelia V and S, leave it off for at least 5 seconds first.
- Do not open the boiler. If the message returns, leave the machine off and note when it came back.
How a technician diagnoses LEVEL ERROR
- Read the message and confirm the model version, Digit, V or S.
- Check water pressure and flow ahead of and through the filter.
- Run the pump and measure its pressure at the boiler fill line.
- Test the fill valve coil and confirm it opens when the control calls for water.
- Inspect the level probe and its wiring for scale and loose connectors.
- Replace the part that fails its test, then run a full fill and heat-up.
- The level probe sits in the boiler circuit, and opening that circuit risks hot water and steam.
- The pump, fill valve and control board carry line voltage, which calls for a meter and a trained hand.
How LEVEL ERROR differs from similar codes
LEVEL ERROR is a boiler fill message. It is separate from OVERCURRENT ERR., which is an electrical load message on the same Aurelia II machines.

Why did the pump switch off by itself?
The boiler gets 90 seconds to reach its level. If it does not, the pump and heater shut off to protect it.
Is it safe to keep restarting the machine?
One restart is the manual step. If the message returns, repeated restarts only repeat the same failed fill.
Can scale cause this with a full boiler?
Yes, a scaled probe can read the wrong level. Water is hard, so we look at the probe if the message returns.
