U-Line Bar Refrigerator Error Code E8: Thermistor 4 Shorted

E8 on a U-Line four-thermistor model means thermistor 4 is shorted. It does not apply to models with fewer sensors, such as the 1215BEV. Check the thermistor status in service mode, and replace the thermistor if the error repeats.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: a shorted sensor can make the control regulate on a bad reading.

What does U-Line error code E8 mean?

U-Line cabinets use thermistors to read temperatures at different points. On the larger models there are four. When the control reads thermistor 4 as shorted, it logs E8 in memory. As with the other sensor errors, only door errors appear on the display, so a technician sees E8 in service mode. A shorted thermistor gives a reading the control cannot use, usually an impossible temperature, so the cabinet may over- or under-cool in the zone that sensor serves. Models with fewer sensors do not have a fourth thermistor, so the code does not apply to them. The manual's action is to check the thermistor status in service mode and replace the thermistor if the error repeats, which avoids replacing a good part after a one-off event. If the error does repeat, the technician usually looks at the lead path before the sensor itself, since a lead crushed by a door hinge, a liner clip or a shelf support is a common reason for a short on a cabinet this size. Water that has found its way to the connector produces the same reading, which is why a dry connector and a clean routing of the lead matter as much as the new part.

What you may notice

  • No visible message, with E8 only in the service log
  • Cabinet or one zone running warmer or colder than set
  • Compressor running longer than normal

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E8 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Thermistor 4 circuit shorted
  • Thermistor lead pinched or crushed
  • Water in the thermistor connector
  • Insulation worn where the lead passes through the cabinet

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check that the door seals and nothing is blocking airflow.
  2. Note whether one zone is off temperature.
  3. Write down the model, since E8 depends on four sensors.
  4. Tell us if the problem appears and disappears.

How a technician diagnoses error code E8

  1. Open service mode and read the thermistor status.
  2. Confirm thermistor 4 reads shorted.
  3. Inspect its lead and connector.
  4. Measure its resistance against the maker's values.
  5. Replace the thermistor if the error repeats.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Service mode access and sensor measurements need the maker's procedure.
  • Replacing a sensor means routing a new lead correctly.

How error code E8 differs from similar codes

E8 is the shorted counterpart of E4; models with fewer than four thermistors never show it.

E8Questions about U-Line error code E8
Does my 1215BEV show E8?

No. It has fewer sensors.

What is the difference from E4?

E4 is thermistor 4 open, while E8 is thermistor 4 shorted.

Why is it not on the display?

Only door errors are shown on the display. A sensor error like E8 is logged in memory and read in service mode.
