Huebsch Washer Error Code E bS: Output Board Shorted
E bS means the output board is shorted or not operating properly, so the control will not run the loads connected to it. The QN manual's step is to disconnect and reconnect power. If E bS shows again, leave the washer off, do not open the cover, and let us test each load on the board.
High: the board refuses to run the loads, so the washer will not run until the circuit is repaired.
What does Huebsch error code E bS mean?
The output board is the part of the control that switches the valves, the door lock and other loads on and off. It also watches itself. When it sees a condition it treats as a short, such as a valve coil drawing far too much current, it refuses to switch those loads because continuing could damage the board or start a fire. E bS is that refusal. Customers see a washer that will not start. A shorted valve or lock coil, damaged wiring or a failed board are the possibilities the manual's description leaves open, and its causes add moisture reaching the board or connectors. The QN manual's step is to disconnect and reconnect power, which makes the board check itself afresh. If the short was a one-time event, the code clears. If E bS appears again, the circuit has a real problem and the board will keep protecting itself by refusing to run. The display cannot tell which load has the short, so each one has to be tested individually.
Affected models and control systems
E bS is listed for Huebsch Quantum toploads in the TLW13C family and for CHM1792C-family QN washer-extractors (20 to 100 lb). The power-cycle step comes from the QN manual.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Washer will not start
- E bS on the display
- Valves or door lock do not respond
- Code returns right after power-up
Possible causes
Listed in Huebsch's documentation
- Shorted valve, lock or other load connected to the board
- Wiring with damaged insulation
- Output board driver circuits
- Moisture reaching the board or connectors
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E bS on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Water inlet valve coil shorted internally after years of heating
- Wire rubbed through against a sharp bracket and touching the frame
- Steam or a weeping hose leaving moisture on the board connectors
Safe checks before calling for service
- Disconnect power and reconnect it, as the QN manual says.
- If it shows E bS again, leave the washer off.
- Do not open the cover, since the board is close to live power.
- Let us schedule service and test each load on the board; tell us if any water or burnt smell was present.
How a technician diagnoses error code E bS
- Read the code and confirm it appears right after power-up.
- Disconnect the loads one at a time and see whether the code clears.
- Measure coil resistance on the valves and lock to find a shorted one.
- Inspect harness insulation and connectors for damage or moisture.
- Replace the shorted load or the output board, then test every output.
- The output board sits close to live 208 to 240 V and its connectors can be energized with the cover off.
- Finding a shorted coil takes a meter and the machine's wiring diagram.
- A shorted load that is left connected can damage a replacement board.
How error code E bS differs from similar codes
E bS is a shorted output board. E Co is a communication loss between the front end and the output board, which can look similar from the operator's side.

Is it safe to power it up again?
One restart is what the QN manual says. If E bS comes back, leave it off.
Could a wet floor cause it?
Moisture reaching the board or connectors is on the manual's list.
Does a new board fix it?
Only if the board is the problem. A shorted valve or lock coil would damage the new board too.
