Huebsch Washer-Extractor Error Code E dr: Drain Time Exceeded

E dr on a Huebsch QN or CHM495R washer-extractor means the water did not fall to the required level within the programmed drain time. Power the machine down or disconnect and reconnect power as the manual describes, and look for a visible backup at the floor drain. If the tub stays full, call us to schedule service.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the cycle stops with the tub full, but it is a drain problem and not a safety lockout.

What does Huebsch error code E dr mean?

During a drain step the control waits for the level sensor to report that the tub is empty. It allows a set drain time, and on the QN models the standard setting is 15 minutes. The CHM495R shows "E dr" when the level is not reached within 15 minutes in a drain step. If the water has not dropped far enough by then, the control stops the program rather than spinning with water in the drum. The manual lists the usual directions: a drain valve that does not open or opens only partway, a blocked drain line or floor drain holding the water back, a level sensor that never sees the tub as empty, and a drain time that has been shortened in the programming.

Affected models and control systems

This page covers Huebsch QN washer-extractors from 20 to 100 lb with the CHM1792C front-end control, and the CHM495R family of washer-extractors from 20 to 100 lb. Topload washers show E dr for a different reason and are covered on their own pages.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The machine sits full of water and does not move on to spin
  • "E dr" shown on the display after a long drain step
  • Drain valve sounds absent or the water level hardly moves
  • Laundry still soaking at the point the cycle stopped

Possible causes

Listed in Huebsch's documentation

  • Drain valve that stays closed or opens only partway
  • Blocked drain line or floor drain holding back the water
  • Level sensor that never sees the tub as empty
  • Drain time shortened in the programming

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E dr on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A floor drain shared with several machines that cannot take a full-size discharge during a busy period
  • Lint or debris collected in the drain valve body so it moves but does not open fully

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Disconnect and reconnect power, or power down the machine, as the manual describes.
  2. Check the floor drain for a visible backup, without reaching into it.
  3. Wait until the lock lets go before opening the door, and expect water inside.
  4. If the tub stays full, note whether other machines drained normally and tell us when you call.

How a technician diagnoses error code E dr

  1. Read the code and check how long the drain step ran against the programmed drain time.
  2. Confirm the programmed drain time has not been shortened from its standard setting.
  3. Inspect the drain line and floor drain for restriction and watch whether the valve actually moves.
  4. Test the drain valve operation and its supply, then check the level sensor reading with the tub empty.
  5. Replace the valve or sensor only once the test points to it.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The drain valve is operated by the control with power present, so testing it means working with the panel open.
  • Checking and correcting a drain time means entering the machine's programming, which should match the machine's own data.
  • A tub full of water has to be emptied safely before any inspection.

How error code E dr differs from similar codes

On QN models the drain time is programmable and set to 15 minutes as standard, while the CHM495R reports the same 15-minute limit in a drain step. Topload washers use a spin-step water check instead.

E drQuestions about Huebsch error code E dr
Can I open the door to let the water out?

No. Wait until the lock releases, and expect water to come out if it does. Power down first as the manual says.

Will a restart clear E dr?

The power-down clears the message, but if the cause is a blocked drain or valve it will come back on the next drain step.

Is E dr always the drain valve?

No. The floor drain, the level sensor and the programmed drain time can all produce it.
