American Dryer Error Code MAIN DOOR OPENED: Door Reads Open
MAIN DOOR OPENED means the Phase 7 control sees a main door as open when it should be closed, so the dryer will not run. Switch the dryer off, close the door firmly with nothing caught, and run a fresh cycle. If the message stays with the door shut, call us.
Low: an interlock stop that clears when the door closes, with no overheating or gas issue involved.

What does American Dryer (ADC) MAIN DOOR OPENED mean?
A tumbler must not turn or fire its burner while a main door is open, so the Phase 7 control and the older Phase 6 control read a door switch continuously. When the switch says the door is open, the control holds the dryer off and displays MAIN DOOR OPENED. The straightforward reading is the correct one most of the time: someone left the door ajar, a corner of a garment is caught in the seal, or the latch did not catch. If the door really is shut and the message stays, the control is being told something false by the switch or its wiring. The manual's list covers the door fully closing and latching, the position and wear of the door switch, the switch wiring, and the control input for the door. Notice that the message says the door was opened, but it does not say anything about heat, gas or airflow. It is a start-time interlock, and it clears as soon as the circuit reads closed.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to American Dryer tumblers with the Phase 7 OPL microprocessor controller, such as the AD-115, AD-120 and AD-170, and the Phase 6 control on ML-175 and ML-190 models. Other controller generations use different messages.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The dryer will not start and MAIN DOOR OPENED shows
- The dryer stops when the door is bumped during a cycle
- The message appears with the door apparently shut
- The dryer runs only when the door is pressed shut
Possible causes
Listed in American Dryer (ADC)'s documentation
- Door not fully closed or latched
- Door switch out of position or worn
- Door switch wiring open or damaged
- Control input for the door not reading the switch
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind MAIN DOOR OPENED on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A garment corner or lint ridge in the seal that keeps the door a fraction from closing
- A door switch actuator worn flat after years of heavy loading and unloading
- A door latch that no longer pulls the door tight enough to reach the switch
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the dryer off and close the main door firmly, checking that nothing is caught.
- Turn power back on and run a fresh cycle.
- Never tape, prop or bypass the door switch.
- If the message stays with the door shut, note whether the latch feels loose.
- Call us and tell us what you saw.
How a technician diagnoses MAIN DOOR OPENED
- Read the message and check the door closes and latches fully.
- Inspect the door switch alignment and the striker for wear.
- Test the switch for continuity with the door closed and power off.
- Check the switch wiring and connector for breaks.
- Confirm the control input reads the door correctly.
- Replace the switch or latch parts only after the test.
- The door switch is a safety interlock for a spinning drum.
- Testing it means working behind the front panel with a meter.
- A taped or propped switch leaves a moving basket reachable, so we do not leave one in place.
How MAIN DOOR OPENED differs from similar codes
LINT ACCESS OPEN reports the lint drawer on the same control, and the Phase 5 control shows dOOr for either opening.

The door is shut. Why does MAIN DOOR OPENED stay up?
The switch or its wiring may not be reporting closed. Check for anything caught first, then call us.
Can I hold the door to finish a load?
No. If it only runs while you hold it, the switch needs service.
Does the message clear by itself?
