American Dryer Error Code SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULT

SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULT means the airflow-proving sail switch on a Phase 7 American Dryer reads closed when it should be open, so the control will not allow heat. Switch the dryer off, clean the lint screen and drawer area, restore power once, and call us if it returns.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the control blocks heat because it cannot prove airflow, but nothing is overheating.

What does American Dryer (ADC) SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULT mean?

A sail switch is a small paddle in the airflow. Moving air pushes it shut, and that tells the control the blower is really moving air. The Phase 7 control uses it in two directions. Before the blower runs, the switch should be open. Once air flows, it should close. If the switch reads closed with no airflow, the control cannot trust it: the switch may be stuck, or shorted, or the input may be reading wrongly. In that case the control refuses to allow heat and shows SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULT. This protects against a burner running with no air, because a stuck-closed switch would otherwise announce that air is present when none is. The manual lists a switch stuck in the closed position, lint packed around it, a shorted wire on the switch circuit, and a control input that reads the switch as closed. Operators see the dryer stop or refuse to heat, with the message displayed.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to American Dryer tumblers with the Phase 7 OPL microprocessor controller, such as the AD-115, AD-120 and AD-170, and the Phase 6 control on ML-175 and ML-190 models. Other controller generations use different messages.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULT appears when a cycle begins
  • The dryer will not start heating
  • The drum may stop soon after start
  • The message returns every time with the dryer idle

Possible causes

Listed in American Dryer (ADC)'s documentation

  • A sail switch stuck in the closed position
  • Lint packed around the sail switch
  • A shorted wire on the switch circuit
  • A control input that reads the sail switch as closed

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULT on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Lint fused into the paddle pivot so the switch stays closed with the blower off
  • A switch wire rubbed through against the duct, shorting the circuit closed
  • A switch contact welded closed after a long period of heavy, dusty running

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the dryer off and let the drum stop.
  2. Clean the lint screen and the lint drawer area.
  3. Do not touch the sail switch or its wiring.
  4. Restore power once and try a start.
  5. If the message returns, tell us whether it appears before the blower even starts.

How a technician diagnoses SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULT

  1. Read the message and see whether it appears before the blower runs.
  2. Check the sail switch paddle moves freely and is free of lint.
  3. Test the switch contacts with the blower off; they should be open.
  4. Check the circuit wiring for a short to ground or to the common.
  5. Verify the control input by disconnecting the switch.
  6. Replace the switch or wiring only after the test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The sail switch sits in the airflow duct near the burner and gates the heat.
  • A stuck-closed switch can hide a real airflow problem, so it is tested with a meter and the airflow is measured.
  • Tracing a shorted wire needs access behind the panels.

How SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULT differs from similar codes

SAIL SWITCH OPEN FAULT is the opposite message: that one means the switch never closed once the blower was running.

SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULTQuestions about American Dryer (ADC) SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULT
What does SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULT tell me about airflow?

It says the switch reads closed when no air is moving, so the control cannot rely on it.

Is it the same as SAIL SWITCH OPEN FAULT?

No, the two are opposite conditions with different likely causes.

Will cleaning lint fix it?

Lint around the switch is on the manual's list, so a clean can help. If it stays, the switch or wiring needs testing.
