American Dryer Error Code SAIL SWITCH OPEN FAULT: No Airflow Proven
SAIL SWITCH OPEN FAULT means the airflow-proving sail switch on a Phase 7 American Dryer stays open once the blower runs, so the control cannot prove airflow and holds the heat off. Empty the lint screen, check the outdoor exhaust opening, restart once, and call us if it returns.
Medium: the control holds the heat off because airflow is not proven, so loads do not dry.

What does American Dryer (ADC) SAIL SWITCH OPEN FAULT mean?
The sail switch is a paddle placed in the dryer's airflow. When the blower pushes air past it, the paddle swings and closes the switch, and the Phase 7 control takes that as proof that air is moving. Heat is only allowed with that proof, because a burner running without airflow would overheat. If the blower is running and the switch stays open, the control concludes the airflow is not there, holds the heat off and stops, displaying SAIL SWITCH OPEN FAULT. The dryer may tumble but stay cold. The manual lists a lint-clogged screen or exhaust duct starving the blower of air, air leaking at the blower housing or drum so airflow is weak, a sail switch paddle that sticks and does not swing closed, and a broken wire or loose plug on the switch circuit. Two of those mean real airflow trouble, and two mean the switch is not reporting real airflow, which is why an airflow measurement settles it.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to American Dryer tumblers with the Phase 7 OPL microprocessor controller, such as the AD-115, AD-120 and AD-170, and the Phase 6 control on ML-175 and ML-190 models. Other controller generations use different messages.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The drum turns but the dryer stays cold
- SAIL SWITCH OPEN FAULT appears soon after heat is called
- Little air comes out of the exhaust opening
- Loads stay damp and the lint screen fills fast
Possible causes
Listed in American Dryer (ADC)'s documentation
- A lint-clogged screen or exhaust duct starving the blower of air
- Air leaking at the blower housing or drum, so airflow is weak
- A sail switch paddle that sticks and does not swing closed
- A broken wire or loose plug on the sail switch circuit
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind SAIL SWITCH OPEN FAULT on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- An exhaust duct with a crushed or lint-filled elbow that starves the blower of air
- A blower housing gasket or drum seal that has failed and lets air escape instead of passing the switch
- A paddle bent or stiff with lint so it will not swing closed even in strong airflow
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the dryer off and let the drum come to rest.
- Empty the lint screen and make sure the lint drawer closes tightly.
- Look for blockage at the outdoor exhaust opening.
- Restart once and watch whether heat begins.
- If the message returns, note how strong the air is at the outlet, and call us.
How a technician diagnoses SAIL SWITCH OPEN FAULT
- Read the message and run the blower to see whether the switch closes.
- Measure airflow and static pressure in the exhaust duct.
- Check the blower housing and drum seals for air leaks.
- Check the paddle moves freely and the contact closes with a push.
- Test the circuit wiring and plug for breaks.
- Fix the confirmed airflow or switch cause and verify heat through a full cycle.
- Measuring airflow needs instruments and often access to the duct run.
- A leaking blower seal sits inside the cabinet.
- The sail switch gates the burner, so it must never be bridged to get heat.
How SAIL SWITCH OPEN FAULT differs from similar codes
SAIL SWITCH CLOSED FAULT is the opposite reading: the switch is closed when no air is moving.

Why does the dryer turn but not heat?
Without proof of airflow the control keeps the burner off, so the drum tumbles cold.
Can I bridge the switch?
No. That removes the check that stops the burner firing without air.
Is it just lint?
Often, but the manual also lists blower leaks, a sticking paddle and wiring.
