American Dryer Error Code ROTATION FAULT: Basket Not Turning
ROTATION FAULT means the Phase 7 control cannot confirm that the basket is turning, so it stops the dryer. Switch it off at the disconnect, and once it is cool take part of the load out if the basket was overfull. Restore power, and call us if the message returns.
Medium: the dryer stops because the basket is not confirmed turning, and the drive needs checking before it runs again.

What does American Dryer (ADC) ROTATION FAULT mean?
Heat in a tumbler only makes sense when the load is moving, so the Phase 7 control wants proof that the basket rotates before it allows heat. It gets that proof through rotation sensing, which watches for movement of the basket. If the control calls for rotation and sees none, it will not run the burner against a stationary load, which could scorch it, and it shows ROTATION FAULT. Operators see a stopped dryer, sometimes with a heavy load inside, and loads that sit still and damp until the drive is checked. The manual lists the drive belt condition, an overloaded or jammed basket, rotation sensing, and the motor and drive parts. A worn belt can slip so the basket turns slowly or not at all, and a heavy load adds to that. The sensing may be correct, since the basket really is stuck, or wrong, since the basket is turning but the signal is not reaching the control.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to American Dryer tumblers with the Phase 7 OPL microprocessor controller, such as the AD-115, AD-120 and AD-170, and the Phase 6 control on ML-175 and ML-190 models. Other controller generations use different messages.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The dryer stops and ROTATION FAULT shows
- The basket does not turn or turns slowly when you spin it by hand with power off
- A load of towels sits wet in a stopped drum
- A squeal or burning-rubber smell was noticed beforehand
Possible causes
Listed in American Dryer (ADC)'s documentation
- Drive belt worn or slipping
- Basket overloaded or jammed
- Rotation sensing not reading the basket
- Motor or drive parts failing
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind ROTATION FAULT on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A drive belt that has stretched or glazed and now slips under a heavy wet load
- A small item such as a coin or hanger caught between the basket and the cabinet
- A rotation sensor pickup that has drifted from its target and misses the basket turning
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the dryer off at the disconnect.
- Once cool, remove part of the load if the basket was overfull.
- Do not reach behind panels or touch belts.
- Restore power and run a lighter load.
- If the message returns, note whether the basket was moving and call us.
How a technician diagnoses ROTATION FAULT
- Read the message and check whether the basket turns freely with power off and locked out.
- Inspect the drive belt for wear, glazing and tension.
- Check the idler, bearings and motor for binding.
- Verify the rotation sensor and its wire against its target.
- Check motor operation and the contactor under load.
- Replace only the part the test proves bad.
- Belts and motors sit behind panels beside moving parts and need lockout before anyone touches them.
- A slipping belt and a bad rotation sensor look alike, so the basket is turned by hand and the sensor is tested.
- Heavy basket and motor parts need proper lifting and support.

Could a big load cause ROTATION FAULT?
Yes, an overloaded basket is on the manual's list, especially with a worn belt. Run a lighter load first.
Is the basket really stuck, or is it a sensor?
Either is possible. We turn the basket by hand with power locked out to tell which.
Can I keep restarting it?
A belt that slips can overheat and a jammed basket can strain the motor, so we would not.
