American Dryer Error Code BURNER PURGE FAULT: Gas Valve Signal Early
BURNER PURGE FAULT means the Phase 7 control saw a gas valve signal during the prepurge period, when the valve should still be off. The dryer stops. Switch it off at the disconnect, leave gas parts alone, and call us before running it again.
High: a gas valve signal at the wrong moment is a safety stop, and the dryer should stay off until it is tested.

What does American Dryer (ADC) BURNER PURGE FAULT mean?
Before a gas American Dryer lights its burner, the Phase 7 control runs air through the burner area for a set time. This prepurge clears out anything that has collected in the burner box, and during it the gas valve is supposed to be completely off. The control reads the valve circuit throughout the purge. If it detects a signal on the valve while the purge is still running, something is energizing the valve at the wrong time. The control treats that as unsafe, stops the dryer and shows BURNER PURGE FAULT. The manual's list covers the ignition module output, the gas valve wiring, the timing of the control signal, and the behavior of the valve itself. This is a safety check on sequence rather than a problem with heat or lint. Nothing in the message says gas is leaking, but because the valve may be getting a signal it should not have, the sensible handling is to stop using the dryer until a technician has tested the circuit.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to gas American Dryer tumblers with the Phase 7 OPL microprocessor controller, such as the AD-120 and AD-170, and the Phase 6 control on ML-175 and ML-190 models. Other controller generations use different codes.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The dryer stops soon after a start, before any heat
- BURNER PURGE FAULT appears on the display
- The drum does not continue a normal heat cycle
Possible causes
Listed in American Dryer (ADC)'s documentation
- Ignition module output energized during prepurge
- Gas valve wiring shorted to a live lead
- Control signal timing wrong
- Gas valve behaving incorrectly
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind BURNER PURGE FAULT on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- An ignition module output that stays energized after the control has dropped its call
- A gas valve wire that touches a live lead and feeds the valve during the purge
- A valve that leaks a signal through a failing coil or connector
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the dryer off at the disconnect.
- If you smell gas, leave the building and call the gas utility from outside.
- Do not touch gas parts or wiring.
- Keep the dryer off and do not keep restarting it.
- Note when in the start sequence the message appeared, and tell us when you call.
How a technician diagnoses BURNER PURGE FAULT
- Read the message and put the dryer through a start with a meter on the valve circuit.
- Check for voltage on the valve leads during prepurge, when it should read zero.
- Isolate the ignition module output from the valve to see which side is energizing it.
- Inspect the harness and connectors for a pinched or shorted wire.
- Test the valve coil and its seat for correct closed behavior.
- A gas valve signal at the wrong moment is a gas safety question, so the circuit must be tested by someone trained on gas trains.
- The tests need live meter readings at the valve with the module running through prepurge.
- Only a technician should replace an ignition module or gas valve.
How BURNER PURGE FAULT differs from similar codes
BURNER IGNITION CONTROL FAULT is the opposite problem on this control: there the valve got no signal during the ignition trial, while here it received one too early.

Does BURNER PURGE FAULT mean there is a gas leak?
Not by itself, but we treat any gas smell as an emergency. Leave the building and call the utility if you notice one.
Can I try again after it cools?
We would not keep trying. The control is blocking the start for a reason, and repeated starts do not clear a circuit problem.
Will it go away on its own?
It can appear to, if the timing issue is intermittent, but that is no reason to trust it. We test the valve circuit.
