American Dryer Phase 6 Messages: Sail Switch, No Airflow, Burner Control

This page covers three separate Phase 6 messages. SAIL SWITCH FAIL blocks start-up because the sail switch is already closed before the cycle begins, and No AIRFLOW means it opened during a running cycle. BURNER CONTROL FAIL means the gas valve output signal from the ignition control did not arrive within the valve time limits.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the dryer is blocked or shut down, and the messages concern airflow and gas ignition safety.

What does American Dryer (ADC) error code NO AIRFLOW mean?

These three messages come from the Phase 6 OPL microprocessor controller and describe different moments. SAIL SWITCH FAIL appears before the cycle starts. The sail switch is closed when it should be open, so the controller refuses to start. No AIRFLOW appears during a running cycle, when the sail switch opens; the dryer then runs with no heat for 3 minutes, or until the tumbler drops below 100 F, and shuts down. BURNER CONTROL FAIL appears when the controller does not get the gas valve output signal from the ignition control within the valve time limits, so it decides the ignition control has failed, with the same 3 minute or 100 F no-heat run-down. The manual lists these as diagnostic messages with an audio indication. Its cause list for the sail switch includes an open or shorted wire and a failing microprocessor controller, and the general list includes insufficient exhaust or make-up air.

Affected models and control systems

American Dryer ML-175 and ML-190 with the Phase 6 OPL microprocessor controller. Phase 7 is a separate section of the same manual and is not covered here.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • SAIL SWITCH FAIL, No AIRFLOW or bURNER CONTROL FAIL on the display
  • Audio indication sounds
  • Dryer will not start, or runs without heat
  • Dryer shuts down after a no-heat run-down

Possible causes

Listed in American Dryer (ADC)'s documentation

  • Sail switch wiring open or shorted (sail switch messages)
  • Failing microprocessor controller
  • Insufficient exhaust or make-up air (general cause list)

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code NO AIRFLOW on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Lint packed in the exhaust duct so the sail switch cannot make airflow
  • Make-up air opening blocked in the laundry room
  • Ignition control or gas valve not responding in time

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Read exactly which of the three messages is showing.
  2. Clean the lint screen and check that the exhaust duct and make-up air opening are not blocked.
  3. Make sure the gas supply valve to the dryer is open.
  4. Restart once, and call us with the exact message and when in the cycle it appeared.

How a technician diagnoses error code NO AIRFLOW

  1. Read exactly which message is shown and when.
  2. For the sail switch messages, check the switch and the two wires to it.
  3. Check exhaust and make-up air.
  4. For bURNER CONTROL FAIL, check the ignition control and the gas valve output.
  5. Replace the failed part.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Gas valve, ignition control and burner checks must be done by a technician who works on gas appliances.
  • Sail switch wiring is tested with a meter at the controller.
  • Exhaust and make-up air problems affect safety and need a proper survey.

How error code NO AIRFLOW differs from similar codes

The three messages have different triggers: closed at start, opened during the cycle, and no gas valve signal.

NO AIRFLOWQuestions about American Dryer (ADC) error code NO AIRFLOW
Are these the same problem?

No. The sail switch messages concern airflow proof; the burner message concerns the gas valve signal.

What happens after No AIRFLOW?

The dryer runs with no heat for 3 minutes or until the tumbler drops below 100 F, then shuts down.

Is exhaust a cause?

The manual's general list includes insufficient exhaust or make-up air.
