What does Kolpak HIGH AIR TEMP mean?

The controller builds a high temperature limit out of three settings: ROOM TEMP, AIR TEMP DIFF and HIGH TEMP ALARM OFFSET. When the return air temperature stays above the sum of those three for longer than HIGH TEMP ALARM DELAY, it raises the text alarm HIGH AIR TEMP in the Alarms menu. The delay is there so that a door left open for a short time, or a fresh delivery, does not trigger the alarm. The manual's action is to press ENTER to silence the alarm for 1 hour while the condition is addressed. If the room is still too warm after that hour, it sounds again. The manual lists no causes, since the alarm describes a result. A warm room can come from the door, the load, a defrost that did not end or a cooling problem, and the AIR TEMP SENSOR alarm is worth ruling out as well.

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind HIGH AIR TEMP on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Room temperature above ROOM TEMP + AIR TEMP DIFF + HIGH TEMP ALARM OFFSET for longer than HIGH TEMP ALARM DELAY
  • Door left open or not sealing after a delivery
  • Large amount of warm product loaded at once
  • Evaporator iced up or condenser dirty, so the system cannot keep up
  • Warm weather and a hot machine room near the condensing unit

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Press ENTER on the display to silence the alarm for 1 hour.
  2. Close the door and check the gasket and sweep.
  3. Check the temperature of the product with a thermometer and move anything at risk.
  4. Make sure the evaporator fans are running and nothing blocks the airflow.
  5. If the room is not cooling after an hour, call for service and note the temperature and when the alarm began.

How a technician diagnoses HIGH AIR TEMP

  1. Read the Alarms menu and compare the controller's air temperature with a reference thermometer.
  2. Check the door, gasket and loading conditions.
  3. Check the AIR TEMP SENSOR reading is valid.
  4. Check the evaporator for frost, the fans and the defrost cycle.
  5. Check the condenser, compressor operation and superheat values.
  6. Confirm the room reaches its set temperature and the alarm clears.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Evaporator and condenser checks mean opening panels around fans and live wiring.
  • Superheat and refrigerant pressures are measured by licensed technicians with gauges.
  • Changing the alarm settings changes how the controller protects the product.

How HIGH AIR TEMP differs from similar codes

HIGH AIR TEMP is the warm side of the room alarms. LOW AIR TEMP is the cold side.
