What does Kolpak LOW AIR TEMP mean?

The low limit is simpler than the high one. The controller takes the ROOM TEMP setting and subtracts LOW TEMP ALARM OFFSET. When the return air temperature stays below that value for longer than LOW TEMP ALARM DELAY, it raises the text alarm LOW AIR TEMP in the Alarms menu. A room that is too cold can freeze produce, dairy and drinks, so the alarm is as much about product as about equipment. The manual's action is to press ENTER to silence the alarm for 1 hour while the condition is addressed, and the alarm sounds again if it is not corrected. It lists no causes. A cold room usually points to the controller not turning cooling off when it should, a setpoint that was changed, or a wrong reading from the return air sensor. The AIR TEMP SENSOR alarm may appear with it if the probe is the problem.

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind LOW AIR TEMP on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Room temperature below ROOM TEMP minus LOW TEMP ALARM OFFSET for longer than LOW TEMP ALARM DELAY
  • Room temperature setting changed lower during a cleaning or service visit
  • Return air sensor reading warmer than the real room, so cooling does not stop
  • Compressor or liquid solenoid not shutting off when the room reaches the setpoint

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Press ENTER on the display to silence the alarm for 1 hour.
  2. Check the product, especially near the evaporator, for freezing.
  3. Move delicate items such as produce away from the cold air stream.
  4. Look at the set temperature on the controller and compare it with the usual value.
  5. If the room stays cold, call for service and note the temperature and set point.

How a technician diagnoses LOW AIR TEMP

  1. Read the Alarms menu and the controller's air temperature.
  2. Compare it with a reference thermometer.
  3. Check the setpoint and alarm offset and delay settings.
  4. Check that the return air sensor reads correctly.
  5. Check that the compressor and any liquid line solenoid shut off at the setpoint.
  6. Confirm the room holds its setting without the alarm returning.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Setpoint and alarm parameters are service-level settings that change how the room is protected.
  • Checking whether the compressor and solenoid shut off needs a meter and gauges.
  • A wrong sensor reading has to be proven against a thermometer before parts are changed.

How LOW AIR TEMP differs from similar codes

LOW AIR TEMP is the cold side of the room alarms. HIGH AIR TEMP covers the warm side.
