Hill Phoenix Display Refrigerator Error Code LA: Low Temperature

LA, Minimum temperature alarm, on a Hill Phoenix CNZLA or CNEZLA merchandiser with the Dixell XR06CX controller means the case temperature reached the minimum alarm setting after the alarm delay. Outputs are unchanged and the alarm stops automatically as the temperature returns to normal.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: the case is colder than its alarm limit, with product at risk of freezing, but the unit keeps running.

What does Hillphoenix error code LA mean?

The controller has a lower alarm limit as well as an upper one, set by the AL parameter. When the case temperature falls to that limit, the controller waits for the Ad delay and, if the temperature is still at or below the limit, shows LA. The manual's section 12 says outputs are unchanged, so cooling carries on as it was, and the alarm clears as soon as the temperature returns to normal. The reason to have a low alarm is to protect product that freezes easily, such as produce, dairy and drinks. The manual gives no causes, but a case that is too cold generally points to a setpoint that was lowered, a room probe that reads warmer than the case, or a compressor that is not cycling off as it should.

Affected models and control systems

CNZLA and CNEZLA single-deck merchandisers (R-290) with the Dixell XR06CX controller. The alarm is described in Appendix B of the installation and operations manual, section 12 and 12.1 of the Dixell instructions.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • LA shows on the controller display
  • Produce or drinks near the discharge are freezing
  • Frost forms on product packaging or the case floor

Possible causes

Listed in Hillphoenix's documentation

  • Temperature reached the AL minimum alarm setting after the Ad delay

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code LA on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Setpoint or alarm limit changed to a lower value
  • Room probe loose or reading warmer than the case, so the compressor runs too long
  • Compressor output staying on because of a stuck relay
  • Product stacked right in front of the cold air outlet

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check the case temperature with a separate thermometer.
  2. Move frost-sensitive product away from the air outlet and look for frozen items.
  3. Ask whether anyone changed the setpoint or pressed the controller keys recently.
  4. Note how long LA has shown and the thermometer reading for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code LA

  1. Read the display and the AL, Ad and setpoint values.
  2. Compare the controller's temperature with a reference thermometer.
  3. Check the room probe's position and resistance.
  4. Check that the compressor output switches off at setpoint.
  5. Correct the setting or part that is causing the over-cooling, then confirm the case holds temperature.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The compressor relay and outputs are inside the controller area at line voltage.
  • Parameter changes in the Dixell controller affect all of the case's temperature control and should be handled carefully.

How error code LA differs from similar codes

LA is low temperature and HA is high temperature. P1 reports the room probe itself, which can make a case cool wrongly.

LAQuestions about Hillphoenix error code LA
Does LA stop cooling?

No. The manual says outputs are unchanged while LA shows.

Does LA clear by itself?

Yes, the manual says it stops as soon as temperature returns to normal.

Is LA caused by a bad probe?

It can be, if the probe reads warmer than the case. A dead probe would show P1 instead.
