Hill Phoenix Display Refrigerator Error Code EA: External Alarm
EA, External alarm, on a Hill Phoenix CNZLA or CNEZLA merchandiser with the Dixell XR06CX controller means an external alarm input has been active for longer than the digital input delay. Outputs are unchanged, and the alarm stops as soon as the digital input is deactivated.
Low: an external signal is reported while the case keeps running, though its cause deserves a look.

What does Hillphoenix error code EA mean?
The Dixell XR06CX has a digital input that can be given a job through the i1F parameter. When i1F is set to EA, the controller treats the input as an external alarm: some other device, wired to that input, closes or opens a contact to report a condition. If the input stays active longer than the di delay, the controller shows EA. The manual's section 8 and section 12 say that outputs are unchanged while EA is active, and that the alarm stops as soon as the input is deactivated. The alarm therefore reports on whatever is connected to the input, not the case temperature. The manual does not say which device is wired there on a given case, so the first step is to trace it.
Affected models and control systems
CNZLA and CNEZLA single-deck merchandisers (R-290) with the Dixell XR06CX controller, where the digital input is set as an external alarm (i1F=EA). The alarm is described in Appendix B, sections 8 and 12.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- EA shows on the controller display
- Cooling continues as before
- Another system connected to the case may also be reporting an alarm
Possible causes
Listed in Hillphoenix's documentation
- Digital input configured as external alarm (i1F=EA) was activated and the di delay elapsed
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EA on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- The device wired to the input has tripped, such as a remote alarm contact
- Wiring to the digital input shorted or loose, reading as active
- Input polarity set opposite to the contact connected
- A contact left connected from earlier work and no longer used
Safe checks before calling for service
- Ask who wired the external alarm input and what it connects to.
- Check the connected device, if you can find it, for its own alarm or an obvious condition.
- Check the case temperature with a separate thermometer to confirm cooling is normal.
- Note when EA began and what device is connected, and tell the technician.
How a technician diagnoses error code EA
- Read the display and confirm the i1F and di settings.
- Identify the device wired to the digital input and read its state.
- Measure the input at the controller in the active and inactive conditions.
- Check the wiring and whether the contact is normally open or normally closed.
- Correct the device, wiring or polarity, and confirm EA stays off.
- Tracing an input may lead to wiring at the case's electrical supply or to another system's panel.
- Changing i1F changes what the input does for the whole case and should be handled by a technician.
How error code EA differs from similar codes
EA is a regular external alarm and CA is a serious external alarm that switches all outputs off. Both use the digital input, but with different settings.

Does EA mean the case is warm?
No. It reports the digital input being active, not a temperature.
Does EA stop cooling?
The manual says outputs are unchanged while EA is active.
Will it clear?
The manual says it stops as soon as the digital input is deactivated.
