Hill Phoenix Display Refrigerator Error Code CA: Serious Alarm
CA, Serious external alarm, on a Hill Phoenix CNZLA or CNEZLA merchandiser with the Dixell XR06CX controller means a serious external alarm input has been active for longer than the digital input delay and the controller has switched all outputs off. The alarm stops as soon as the input is deactivated.
High: all outputs are off, so the case is not cooling until the input is deactivated.

What does Hillphoenix error code CA mean?
CA is the heavier of the two external alarms on the Dixell XR06CX. When the digital input is configured with i1F set to bA, the input is treated as a serious alarm. If it stays active longer than the di delay, the controller shows CA and, as the manual's section 12 states, switches all outputs off, so the compressor and the other outputs stop. The alarm clears as soon as the digital input is deactivated, and the case resumes. Because the input is wired to some other device, such as a safety switch, CA describes a condition detected by that device and the controller's response is to shut the case down. The manual does not say what is connected on a given case, so the cause has to be found by tracing the input.
Affected models and control systems
CNZLA and CNEZLA single-deck merchandisers (R-290) with the Dixell XR06CX controller, where the digital input is set as a serious alarm (i1F=bA). The alarm is described in Appendix B, sections 8 and 12.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- CA shows on the controller display
- The compressor and fans have all stopped
- The case warms up steadily
Possible causes
Listed in Hillphoenix's documentation
- Digital input configured as serious alarm (i1F=bA) was activated and the di delay elapsed
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code CA on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- The safety device on the input has tripped, such as a pressure or leak contact
- Wiring to the input shorted, loose or damaged, reading as active
- Input polarity set opposite to the contact connected
- A contact left connected from earlier work and now reading active
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check the case temperature right away with a separate thermometer and move product to working cold storage if it is rising.
- Check the device connected to the input, if you can find it without opening panels, for an alarm indication.
- Do not repeatedly cycle the power to force the case on.
- Note the time CA began and the temperature reading and tell the technician at once.
How a technician diagnoses error code CA
- Read the display and confirm the i1F=bA and di settings.
- Identify the device connected to the input and read its state.
- Measure the digital input in the active and inactive condition.
- Check the wiring and contact type for a short or wrong polarity.
- Correct the cause, confirm CA clears and the compressor restarts normally.
- The input may be wired to a safety device on the refrigerant circuit of a flammable R-290 system.
- Defeating the input would turn off the protection it provides and must not be done by an operator.
How error code CA differs from similar codes
CA switches all outputs off, while EA leaves outputs unchanged. Both are external alarms through the digital input with different settings.

Related Hillphoenix display case error codes
Why has the case stopped?
The manual says CA switches all outputs off, so the compressor and fans stop until the input is deactivated.
Will it restart on its own?
The manual says the alarm stops as soon as the digital input is deactivated, so the case should resume.
Is CA the same as EA?
No. EA is a regular external alarm and keeps outputs as they were.
