U-Line Bar Refrigerator Error Codes E5 to E8: Shorted Thermistor

E5 to E8 on a U-Line Class series unit mean thermistor 1 to 4 is shorted. E8, thermistor 4, applies only to models with four sensors. Check the thermistor status in service mode and replace the thermistor if the error repeats.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: a shorted sensor can make the control regulate on a wrong reading.

What does U-Line error code E5 mean?

These codes are the shorted counterparts of E1 to E4. E5 is thermistor 1, E6 is thermistor 2, E7 is thermistor 3 and E8 is thermistor 4. A shorted thermistor reads as an impossible or invalid temperature, so the control cannot rely on it, and it stops regulating from that sensor the way the maker intended. E8 does not apply to models such as the 1215BEV that have fewer sensors, and the guide covers four-sensor models too. The errors are logged in memory, with only door errors visible on the display. A technician opens service mode, reads the thermistor status, and replaces the thermistor if the error repeats. The series runs to E8 on units that carry four sensors, which is why the 1224 models list all four codes while the 1215BEV stops at E7. A shorted sensor usually points to a pinched lead or water in the connector, which is why the technician inspects the lead path before simply replacing the part.

Affected models and control systems

U-Line Class series U-1215BEVS-00A and U-1224BEVS-00A. E8 applies only where a fourth thermistor is fitted, not on the 1215BEV.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Cabinet temperature that does not match the set point
  • Compressor cycling oddly
  • Error entries in the service-mode log

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E5 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Thermistor 1, 2, 3 or 4 circuit shorted
  • Thermistor lead crushed or pinched
  • Water in the sensor or its connector
  • Insulation worn through where the lead passes through the cabinet

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check that nothing in the cabinet presses on the sensor.
  2. Note whether the cabinet runs warmer or colder than the set point.
  3. Keep drinks away from the rear wall.
  4. Write down the model, since E8 depends on the number of sensors.

How a technician diagnoses error code E5

  1. Read the service-mode thermistor status.
  2. Identify which thermistor reads shorted.
  3. Inspect the lead path for pinching and the connector for moisture.
  4. Measure resistance against the maker's table.
  5. Replace the thermistor and retest the unit.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Reading sensor values requires service mode.
  • Replacing a sensor means opening the liner and routing the lead correctly.

How error code E5 differs from similar codes

E5 to E8 are the shorted thermistors; the open ones are E1 to E4 on the same control.

E5Questions about U-Line error code E5
Does E5 mean the same as E1?

Both concern thermistor 1, but E1 is open while E5 is shorted.

Does my 1215BEV have E8?

No. E8 does not apply to models with fewer sensors.

What happens if I ignore it?

The control cannot read one of its temperature points, so it may over-cool or under-cool, and the cabinet will not hold the set point reliably.
