American Dryer Phase 6 Message: dRUM SAFETY FAIL
DRUM SAFETY FAIL means the tumbler hi-limit switch opened before or during a heating cycle. The dryer runs with no heat for 3 minutes or until below 100 F, then shuts down. Check the exhaust and lint conditions, and have the tumbler hi-limit circuit checked.
High: a tumbler safety limit has opened, so the dryer must not be used until the cause is found.

What does American Dryer (ADC) DRUM SAFETY FAIL mean?
The tumbler hi-limit switch watches the temperature of the air in the drum and opens if it gets too high. The Phase 6 OPL controller monitors that switch. If it opens before or during a heating cycle, the display shows dRUM SAFETY FAIL. The controller removes the heat and runs the dryer with no heat for 3 minutes or until the temperature drops below 100 F, then shuts down. The manual's action is to check the tumbler hi-limit circuit and the exhaust and lint conditions. Because the switch can open before the cycle even starts, it may be open from a previous overheating that has not cooled, or it may be a switch that has failed open. A dryer with a restricted exhaust runs the drum air hotter and trips this switch sooner. Operators see a dryer that stops heating and shuts down.

What you may notice
- DRUM SAFETY FAIL on the display
- Dryer loses heat or will not heat
- Dryer shuts down after the no-heat run-down
- Message may appear before the cycle starts
Possible causes
Listed in American Dryer (ADC)'s documentation
- Tumbler hi-limit switch open
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind DRUM SAFETY FAIL on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Lint packed in the exhaust or lint screen
- Exhaust duct too long or crushed
- Switch not yet cooled from earlier overheating
- Switch failed open
Safe checks before calling for service
- Let the dryer cool completely.
- Clean the lint screen and check the exhaust outlet.
- Restart a short cycle.
- If dRUM SAFETY FAIL returns, note whether it appears before or during heating, then call us.
How a technician diagnoses DRUM SAFETY FAIL
- Read the message and confirm dRUM SAFETY FAIL.
- Check the exhaust and lint conditions.
- Check the tumbler hi-limit circuit and switch.
- Test the switch for continuity when cool.
- Replace the switch if it fails.
- Limit circuits on a gas dryer are checked by a technician.
- Exhaust restriction needs a duct check with instruments.
- Resetting or bypassing a limit is not acceptable.
How DRUM SAFETY FAIL differs from similar codes
DRUM SAFETY FAIL is the tumbler hi-limit; bURNER SAFETY FAIL is the burner hi-limit.
