Nuova Simonelli Espresso Machine OVERCURRENT ERR.: Electrical Load
OVERCURRENT ERR. Means the control found an incorrect electrical input from one of the machine's loads, so it switched off the pump, the heating element and every other function. Switch the machine off at its main switch and do not open it. Call us and tell us what happened just before the message appeared.
High: the pump and heater are disabled and the electrical cause must be tested before the machine runs again.

What does Nuova Simonelli OVERCURRENT ERR. mean?
Each electrical load in an espresso machine, such as the pump motor, heating element and solenoid coils, draws a predictable current. The Aurelia II control keeps an eye on the electrical input while the machine operates. If it finds an input that is not right, which the manual attributes to a problem in one of the loads, it treats the machine as unsafe to keep running. The display shows OVERCURRENT ERR., the pump is switched off, and the heating element and all other functions are disabled. This is a protective response. Because the message is about current, the manual's own direction is that the safe response is to switch the machine off and have a technician test it. The message does not say which load is responsible. The pump motor, the heater, a solenoid coil, or wiring and a connector on the way to them can all cause it, and the control board that does the measuring can also be the part that is wrong. Telling them apart takes a meter, not a restart.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the Nuova Simonelli Aurelia II in the Digit, V and S versions, per the Aurelia II User Handbook function messages. Other Nuova Simonelli lines may list different messages.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- OVERCURRENT ERR. On the display
- The pump stops and no water flows from the group
- The machine stops heating and steam is unavailable
- A tripped breaker at the panel in some cases
Possible causes
Listed in Nuova Simonelli's documentation
- Pump motor drawing incorrect current
- Heating element with an electrical problem
- Solenoid valve coil with an electrical problem
- Wiring, connector or control board problem
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind OVERCURRENT ERR. on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Heating element insulation weakened by scale and moisture around its terminals
- Pump motor winding drawing high current after a dry-running event
- Solenoid coil shorted after a leak dripped onto its connector
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off at its main switch.
- Look at the breaker for the machine. If it has tripped, do not reset it repeatedly.
- Check the floor and the area around the machine for water, and keep it away from the machine.
- Do not open the machine. Call us as the owner's manual directs, and write down what was happening just before the message, such as a brew, a steam draw or a fill.
How a technician diagnoses OVERCURRENT ERR.
- Read the message and note the model version, then ask what the machine was doing when it appeared.
- Isolate the machine and inspect for moisture, scorching and damaged cable insulation.
- Measure insulation and resistance on the heating element.
- Check the pump motor windings and the current it draws.
- Test each solenoid coil for resistance and shorts.
- Check connectors and the control board outputs, replace only the part that fails, then run a full cycle under load.
- Finding the load that is over-drawing means measuring current and insulation on live 208-240 V circuits.
- Moisture near the heater terminals or pump creates a shock risk that no operator check removes.
- Resetting a tripped breaker again and again can overheat wiring and hide which load is failing.
How OVERCURRENT ERR. differs from similar codes
OVERCURRENT ERR. Points at electrical current. LEVEL ERROR on the same machines is a water-fill message with a different set of checks.

Can I restart the machine and keep working?
The manual directs you to switch it off and call for service. Because the message concerns electrical current, we would not keep cycling the power.
Does a tripped breaker mean the same thing?
It can point to the same problem, but it can also be a circuit issue. We check the machine and the circuit separately.
What should I tell the technician?
What the machine was doing, and whether you noticed water or a burning smell.
