ACP Amana Oven Error Code C-1: Temperature Sensor Shorted (AXP20)

C-1 on an older Amana Xpress AXP20 or MXP20 oven means the temperature sensor (RTD) reads shorted, so the control cannot read the cavity temperature and refuses to heat. It stops the oven soon after it starts. Unplug it, let it cool, replug it, and tell us if the oven was recently serviced.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the oven will not heat with a shorted sensor, but it is safe to leave unplugged.

What does ACP Amana error code C-1 mean?

The RTD sensor feeds the control a resistance that rises with cavity temperature. When two parts of the sensor circuit touch, the resistance drops toward nothing, and the control reads C-1 as a shorted sensor. It cannot read the cavity temperature, so it refuses to heat. The oven stops soon after it starts. Heat and age can break down the insulation on the sensor wire over the years, letting the conductors meet. A wire caught under a panel is the usual cause of a short, which is why the maker has you mention whether the oven was recently serviced or the back panel refitted. A pinched cable, a worn one, a dirty or damp connector at the main board, or a board input that reads the circuit as shorted are the other possibilities in the manual. The owner steps are modest: unplug the oven, let it cool, and plug it in again. Leave all covers on. A shorted sensor circuit means no heating, so the oven stays idle until the wire is traced.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the older Amana Xpress AXP20 and MXP20 touch pad combination ovens, which use hyphenated codes, as described in the ACP Commercial Service and Training Manual. The AXP22 and MXP22 show this reading as C1.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • C-1 on the display
  • The oven stops shortly after starting
  • No heating
  • The code appears right after a recent repair

Possible causes

Listed in ACP Amana's documentation

  • RTD cable insulation worn through from age and heat
  • RTD wire pinched under a panel
  • Connector at the main board dirty or damp
  • AXP20 main board input reading the RTD circuit as shorted

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code C-1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A sensor lead that was pinched when a panel was refitted during an earlier repair or cleaning
  • Condensation in the sensor connector that bridges the contacts after a heavy wash-down

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Unplug the oven, let it cool and plug it in again.
  2. Mention whether the oven was recently serviced or the back panel refitted, because a wire caught under a panel is the usual cause of a short.
  3. Leave all covers on.
  4. A shorted sensor circuit means no heating, so keep the oven idle.
  5. Wait for us to trace the wire.

How a technician diagnoses error code C-1

  1. Read the code and confirm it repeats after a cool start.
  2. Trace the RTD cable for pinches, worn insulation or contact with metal.
  3. Measure the RTD resistance and the wire for a short to ground.
  4. Check the connector at the main board for dirt or damp.
  5. Repair the cable or replace the RTD or board according to the test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • A short inside a cable can only be traced with a meter, because it cannot be seen from outside the oven.
  • The cable runs near hot parts and live boards, so tracing it is not safe for an operator.
  • A wire pinched under a panel has to be freed and the panel refitted correctly to stop the short returning.

How error code C-1 differs from similar codes

C-0 is the open reading, and C-2 is an out-of-range one from the same sensor. C-1 is the shorted reading.

C-1Questions about ACP Amana error code C-1
Why does a recent repair matter?

A wire caught under a refitted panel is the usual cause of a short, so repair history helps us find it.

Does C-1 mean the oven is too hot?

No. It means the sensor circuit is shorted, so the control cannot read the temperature at all.

Can I try again after it cools?

One restart is fine, but if C-1 returns the oven should stay idle.
