ACP Amana Oven Error Code D-0: Thermocouple Open (AXP20)

D-0 on an older Amana Xpress AXP20 or MXP20 oven means the thermocouple reads open. The thermocouple is the second temperature sensor that confirms the cavity is not overheating, so with it open the control stops heating. Unplug the oven, let it cool, and keep it off if D-0 returns.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the overheating check is not working, so the oven must not run until it is repaired.

What does ACP Amana error code D-0 mean?

The oven carries two temperature sensors with different jobs. The RTD tells the control how hot the cavity is for cooking, and the thermocouple is a second sensor the control uses to confirm the cavity is not overheating. If the thermocouple circuit is open, the control has no way to confirm that, and D-0 appears. It then stops heating, because an oven that cannot check for overheating should not run. A broken wire or a loose connector is behind it. The manual lists a thermocouple wire broken open in the older AXP20 cavity, a plug that has worked loose on the AXP20 board, a lead damaged by years of cavity heat, and a main board input that cannot read the thermocouple. The owner step is to unplug the oven and let it cool, then plug it in and start a program to see whether D-0 returns. Keep trays and foil clear of the back wall. Because the thermocouple checks for overheating, the oven should not run while this code shows. The wiring is hot and live, so panels stay shut.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the older Amana Xpress AXP20 and MXP20 touch pad combination ovens, which use hyphenated codes, as described in the ACP Commercial Service and Training Manual. The AXP22 and MXP22 spell this reading D0.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • D-0 on the display
  • The oven stops heating
  • Programs end soon after starting
  • The code returns after a cooled restart

Possible causes

Listed in ACP Amana's documentation

  • Thermocouple wire broken open in the AXP20 cavity
  • Thermocouple plug loose on the AXP20 board
  • Thermocouple lead damaged by years of cavity heat
  • Main board input unable to read the thermocouple

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code D-0 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A foil-wrapped item or tray that pressed against the thermocouple and kinked its lead
  • A thermocouple plug whose pins have lost spring tension after years of heating cycles

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Unplug the oven and let it cool, then plug it in and start a program to see whether D-0 returns.
  2. Keep trays and foil clear of the back wall.
  3. Do not run the oven while this code shows.
  4. Leave panels shut; the wiring is hot and live.
  5. Tell us whether D-0 showed at once or after cooking.

How a technician diagnoses error code D-0

  1. Read the code and see whether it repeats with the cavity cold.
  2. Inspect the thermocouple lead and plug for breaks or heat damage.
  3. Test continuity of the thermocouple circuit.
  4. Check the board input for the thermocouple.
  5. Replace the thermocouple, lead or board that fails.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The thermocouple is the oven's overheating check, so the oven must not be run until it is repaired.
  • The lead sits in the hot cavity and has to be tested for continuity with the oven unplugged and opened.
  • Continuity testing near a live board is work for a trained technician.

How error code D-0 differs from similar codes

D-1 is the shorted thermocouple reading and D-2 the out-of-range reading. These are separate from the C codes, which cover the cooking temperature RTD.

D-0Questions about ACP Amana error code D-0
What does the thermocouple do that the RTD does not?

The RTD reads cooking temperature. The thermocouple is a second sensor that confirms the cavity is not overheating.

Can I run the oven just once more?

One restart to see if D-0 returns is fine. Do not cook with it while the code is present.

Is D-0 the same as D0?

Yes in meaning. D0 is the newer AXP22/MXP22 spelling.
