ACP Amana Oven Error Code G-2: Magnetron TCO or Cooling Motor (AXP20)
G-2 on an older Amana Xpress AXP20 or MXP20 oven means the magnetron thermal cut-out has opened or the cooling motor has a problem. Unplug the oven, let it cool, clean the filter and vents, and try once. Keep the oven off if G-2 returns, because the magnetrons hold a charge.
High: the microwave circuit is protecting itself from heat, and the parts involved hold a charge.

What does ACP Amana error code G-2 mean?
The magnetrons make the microwave energy, and they run hot. A cooling motor moves air across them. The magnetron thermal cut-out, or TCO, is a safety switch that opens when a magnetron gets too hot. G-2 appears when the TCO opens or the cooling motor has a problem. The two are linked, because a motor that does not move enough air lets the magnetron heat until the TCO opens. A blocked air filter or blocked vents do the same thing from the other side. The manual's list names the cooling motor and fan blade, the air filter and vents, the magnetron thermal cut-out and the magnetrons themselves. The owner steps are to unplug the oven and wait for it to cool, take out the filter, wash it as the manual says, refit it and clear the vents, then plug in and try once. If G-2 returns, keep the oven off. The microwave circuit uses high voltage, and the magnetrons hold a charge even when the oven is unplugged, so the body is not for owners to open.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the older Amana Xpress AXP20 and MXP20 touch pad combination ovens, which use hyphenated codes, as described in the ACP Commercial Service and Training Manual. The AXP22 and MXP22 write this reading G2.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- G-2 on the display
- Microwave cooking stops
- The oven runs briefly and then stops
- The cooling fan sounds weak or noisy
Possible causes
Listed in ACP Amana's documentation
- Cooling motor or fan blade not moving enough air
- Air filter or vents blocked
- Magnetron thermal cut-out opened
- Magnetron overheated or failed
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code G-2 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A cooling motor bearing dried out by years of warm air so it turns slower than it should
- A filter that was washed but refitted in the wrong position, blocking part of the intake
Safe checks before calling for service
- Unplug the oven and wait for it to cool.
- Take out the filter, wash it as the manual says, refit it and clear the vents.
- Plug in and try once.
- If G-2 returns, keep the oven off.
- Do not open the body; the magnetrons hold a charge even when the oven is unplugged.
How a technician diagnoses error code G-2
- Read the code and see whether the cooling motor runs when powered.
- Check airflow across the magnetrons and the filter condition.
- Test the magnetron TCO for continuity cold.
- Test the magnetrons with the oven safely discharged.
- Replace the motor, TCO or magnetron that fails, and restore airflow.
- The magnetrons hold a charge even when the oven is unplugged, which makes opening the body dangerous.
- The microwave circuit uses high voltage and is for a technician only.
- A cut-out that keeps tripping points to the motor or airflow, which has to be tested rather than assumed.
How error code G-2 differs from similar codes
G-0 on the same oven is maximum temperature exceeded. G-2 is about the magnetron TCO and the cooling motor.

Related ACP Amana high-speed oven error codes
Is the cooling motor the cause?
It can be. A blocked filter or vents can also open the TCO, so we check airflow first.
Can I wash the filter and retry?
Yes, once. If G-2 returns, keep the oven off.
Why not open it to look?
Magnetrons hold a charge even when the oven is unplugged, so it is dangerous.
