American Dryer Error Code LOW VOLTAGE FAULT: Power Below Limits
LOW VOLTAGE FAULT means power to a Phase 7 American Dryer dropped below operating values, and the dryer shut down. Switch it off at the disconnect, note whether lights or other machines dipped at the same moment, and restore power once. Call us if the message returns.
Medium: the dryer stops until supply voltage recovers, and a weak feed can keep repeating the stop.

What does American Dryer (ADC) LOW VOLTAGE FAULT mean?
The Phase 7 control and the dryer's motors and heat circuits all need steady supply voltage. The control measures that supply while the dryer runs. If the reading falls below what the dryer is built to operate on, the control does not try to run on weak power, since that can stall motors and give unreliable control decisions. It stops the dryer and shows LOW VOLTAGE FAULT. Operators see the dryer stop with the message, sometimes when other equipment in the building starts up or when the building supply is weak. The dryer may restart once power is steady, but it will not run on weak power. The manual lists low supply voltage at the building feeding the dryer, a loose connection or tired breaker, a weak power supply inside the controller, and damaged or undersized wiring that drops voltage. Most of those sit outside the dryer itself, in the feed, which is why a meter reading under load is the real test.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to American Dryer tumblers with the Phase 7 OPL microprocessor controller, such as the AD-115, AD-120 and AD-170, and the Phase 6 control on ML-175 and ML-190 models. Other controller generations use different messages.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The dryer stops and LOW VOLTAGE FAULT shows
- It stops when a large machine nearby starts
- Lights flicker or other machines slow at the same moment
- The dryer restarts normally after a few minutes
Possible causes
Listed in American Dryer (ADC)'s documentation
- Low supply voltage at the building feeding the dryer
- A loose connection or tired breaker feeding the dryer
- A weak power supply inside the controller
- Damaged or undersized wiring that drops voltage
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind LOW VOLTAGE FAULT on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A shared circuit where a washer-extractor or compressor start pulls the voltage down for a moment
- A breaker or disconnect terminal that runs warm and drops voltage only under heavy load
- A long feeder run to a dryer that was added later on wire too small for the distance
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the dryer off at the disconnect.
- Note whether lights or other machines dipped at the same moment.
- Do not open the electrical cabinet or touch connections.
- Restore power once and see whether the message returns.
- Call us if it does, and tell us what else was running.
How a technician diagnoses LOW VOLTAGE FAULT
- Read the message and note when it occurs in the day.
- Measure incoming voltage at the disconnect with the dryer idle and running.
- Check the breaker, disconnect and lug terminals for heat and tightness.
- Check feeder wire size and voltage drop to the dryer.
- Measure the control's own supply and replace the supply only if the incoming power is good.
- Verify steady voltage through a full cycle.
- Voltage readings have to be taken on live electrical equipment with a meter.
- The cause is often in the building feed, which may also need an electrician.
- Running a dryer on weak power can overheat its motors.

Related American Dryer (ADC) dryer error codes
Is LOW VOLTAGE FAULT a problem with the dryer or the building?
It can be either. The manual lists the building supply, the breaker, wiring and the controller's own supply.
Can I keep restarting it?
Once is fine. If it keeps stopping, the supply needs a meter test.
Does it clear when power steadies?
Yes, the dryer may restart on its own once voltage is back, but it will stop again on the next dip.
