American Dryer Phase 6 Message: ROTATE SENSOR FAIL
ROTATE SENSOR FAIL means there is a problem in the tumbler rotation circuit, or the controller program (location 2) is set to ROTATE SENSOR ACTIVE on a dryer without the optional rotation sensor. Check the rotation sensor circuit. On dryers without the sensor, set the program to No ROTATE SENSOR.
Medium: the dryer stops until the setting or the rotation circuit is corrected.

What does American Dryer (ADC) ROTATE SENSOR FAIL mean?
Some dryers have an optional rotation sensor that tells the controller the tumbler is turning. The Phase 6 OPL controller has a setting, at program location 2, for whether that sensor is fitted. If the setting says ROTATE SENSOR ACTIVE and the controller does not see rotation, it shows ROTATE SENSOR FAIL. The manual gives two causes: a problem in the tumbler rotating circuit, or the program location 2 set incorrectly. The second is simple. On a dryer without the optional sensor, the setting must be No ROTATE SENSOR, and a wrong setting can appear after a controller change or a program reset. The first needs the rotation sensor circuit checked. Operators see the dryer stop with the message even though the tumbler is turning, or stop because it is not.

What you may notice
- ROTATE SENSOR FAIL on the display
- Dryer stops or will not start
- Tumbler may be turning normally
- Message appears after a controller change
Possible causes
Listed in American Dryer (ADC)'s documentation
- Problem in tumbler rotating circuit
- Program location 2 set incorrectly
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind ROTATE SENSOR FAIL on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Controller reset to a program that expects the sensor
- Sensor wire loose at its connector
- Belt slipping so the tumbler turns slowly
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check whether the tumbler turns freely by hand with the power off.
- Switch the dryer off and on once.
- Do not change the program yourself unless the manual's steps are in hand.
- Note whether your dryer has the optional rotation sensor, then call us.
How a technician diagnoses ROTATE SENSOR FAIL
- Read the message and confirm ROTATE SENSOR FAIL.
- Check program location 2 for the right setting.
- On dryers without the sensor, set the program to No ROTATE SENSOR.
- Check the rotation sensor circuit and wiring.
- Check the tumbler drive for slipping.
- Program locations are changed in the controller's programming mode.
- Sensor circuit tests need a meter.
- A tumbler that does not turn correctly is a safety matter.
How ROTATE SENSOR FAIL differs from similar codes
ROTATE SENSOR FAIL may be a wrong program setting, not a sensor failure.

Does my dryer need a rotation sensor?
It is optional. Without it, the program must be set to No ROTATE SENSOR.
Is the sensor broken?
Maybe not. The setting at location 2 may be wrong.
Where is the setting?
Program location 2.
