Douglas Machines Pot and Pan Washer Error: PGM LED 4 Flashes
Four flashes of the PGM light, then a pause, mean the water level was lost during a machine cycle, for instance when a large container collects water. The heater turns off at once and the cycle aborts after five seconds of low level. Check what was in the machine, look for leaks, and clean the probe.
Medium: the cycle aborts to protect the heater, and a repeat points to a leak or probe that needs attention.

What does Douglas Machines PGM LED 4 flashes mean?
Once a Douglas washer with the 1827 board is washing, the level probe keeps checking that the tank still holds water. If the water drops away from the probe during the cycle, the board switches the heater off immediately, and after five seconds of low level it aborts the cycle and flashes the PGM light four times. The quick heater shutoff is the key feature, because a heater running in a low tank can be damaged within moments. The maker's example is a large container that collects water: a deep pan or a bus tub loaded upside down can trap gallons, so the tank level falls although nothing leaks. The other causes are the usual drains for a wash tank: a leak at the drain or a door, a level probe that is dirty and reads low, or a fill that never reached the correct level in the first place. A look at what was loaded tells you a lot. If nothing large was in the machine, floor water and the drain valve are the next place to look. Staff should never leave the machine heating with low water in the tank while checking.

What you may notice
- The PGM light flashes four times, pauses, and repeats
- The cycle ends abruptly during the wash
- The heater goes off immediately
- The tank level is visibly low
Possible causes
Listed in Douglas Machines's documentation
- Large pans or containers holding water out of the tank
- Leak at the drain or a door
- Dirty level probe reading low
- Fill that stopped short of the correct level
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind PGM LED 4 flashes on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A drain valve that seeps a little each cycle until the level drops past the probe
- A door gasket worn along the lower edge that lets spray run out
Safe checks before calling for service
- Count four flashes with the pause between groups.
- Look at what was in the machine, since a large container can hold a lot of water.
- Check for leaks and wipe up water. Clean the float switch and level probe.
- Do not leave the machine heating with low water. If four flashes return, call us.
- Tell us what kind of load was in the machine.
How a technician diagnoses PGM LED 4 flashes
- Confirm four flashes and try a cycle with a normal load.
- Watch the tank level during a wash for a drop.
- Check the drain valve seat, door gasket and fittings for leaks.
- Clean the level probe and test that the board reads it correctly at normal level.
- Confirm the heater is protected and the elements are covered.
- Repair the leak or probe, then run a full cycle.
- The heater is switched off on purpose, so finding the cause means a hot tank and wet floor.
- A real leak and a dirty probe look the same on the display, so a watched cycle is needed.
- Probe wiring and the drain valve are behind panels.
How PGM LED 4 flashes differs from similar codes
Three flashes on the same board mean the master relay dropped out; four flashes mean the level was lost.

Why does the heater shut off right away?
A heater without water around it can be damaged quickly, so the board cuts it first.
Can a load cause it?
Yes. Large pans or containers can hold water out of the tank.
Is a leak always the cause?
No. A dirty probe can read low in a full tank.
