Eemax Booster Heater Error Code F4: Inlet Thermistor Out of Range
F4 on the Eemax LCD control means the inlet thermistor is out of range, and the heater shuts down immediately. The screen alternates F4 with SETPOINT every 3 seconds. The manual says to call Eemax Technical Support.
High: the heater shuts down immediately and will not heat water until the cause is corrected.

What does Eemax error code F4 mean?
The inlet thermistor tells the Eemax control how warm the incoming water is. The control combines that reading with the outlet temperature and the setpoint to work out how much power the elements need. If the inlet reading falls outside the range the sensor should give, the control no longer has a trustworthy starting point, so it shuts the heater down immediately and shows F4 alternating with SETPOINT every 3 seconds. The manual describes the code as inlet thermistor out of range, lists no further cause and tells you to call Eemax Technical Support. It gives no reset step. The code F0 is the matching message for the outlet thermistor, and E1 is a separate, logged-only error for inlet water that is simply too hot. F4 is about the sensor reading, not the water temperature itself.
Affected models and control systems
This code is for the Eemax SpecAdvantage and SafeAdvantage electric tankless heaters with the LCD control. The manual mentions sanitation models in circulator systems and does not call any of them booster heaters.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- F4 alternating with SETPOINT
- Heater off and no hot water
- Cold water at the outlet
- Code returning after the power is cycled
Possible causes
Listed in Eemax's documentation
- Inlet thermistor out of range
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code F4 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Inlet thermistor connector loose or corroded
- Sensor lead damaged near the inlet fitting
- Water leaking near the inlet and wetting the sensor wiring
Safe checks before calling for service
- Note F4 and SETPOINT and leave the heater off.
- Check the inlet area for visible leaks or dampness, without opening the heater.
- Make sure the supply valves are open.
- Call Eemax Technical Support, as the manual says.
- For the service call, write the exact screen text, the model and when it first shut down.
How a technician diagnoses error code F4
- Read F4 and lock out power before any cover is removed.
- Inspect the inlet thermistor, connector and lead for damage or moisture.
- Measure the thermistor resistance and compare it with the inlet water temperature.
- Compare the control's reading with the measured value.
- Replace the thermistor or control based on the result and verify the heater runs.
- The thermistor connector is inside an enclosure with high-amp wiring that is isolated before the cover is removed.
- Resistance readings compared with the manufacturer's table require a meter and the right values.
- A leak near the inlet involves plumbing and electrical safety at once.
How error code F4 differs from similar codes
F4 is the inlet thermistor. F0 covers the outlet thermistor, and E1 is a logged-only error for hot inlet water.

Related Eemax booster heater error codes
Is F4 the same as E1?
No. E1 means inlet water is too hot and is only logged. F4 means the inlet thermistor reading is out of range, and the heater shuts down.
Can I reset F4 by turning the power off?
The manual gives no reset. It says to call Eemax Technical Support.
What does out of range mean?
The sensor gave a reading outside the values it should produce. The manual does not give the limits.
