FETCO Coffee Brewer Error Code 051: Open Temperature Probe
Code 051 on a FETCO XTS brewer means the temperature probe reads open. The manual says to check all connections and replace the probe if necessary. The code does not clear by switching the power off and on; reset it in the programming menu after the repair.
High: with no temperature reading the brewer cannot regulate heating and should not run.

What does FETCO error code 051 mean?
The brewer's control measures tank temperature through a probe, and it expects a reading in a normal electrical range. Code 051 is posted when the probe reads open, as if the circuit between the control and the probe element were broken. With no usable reading, the control cannot regulate heating, so it flags the error. The manual gives two causes, a bad probe connection or a failed probe, and the order matters: check all connections first, and replace the probe only if necessary. That separates 051 from 050, the shorted-probe code, where the manual goes straight to replacing the probe. Switching the brewer off and on does nothing to the stored error; it stays until reset. When the connection or probe has been dealt with, open PROGRAMMING, then OTHER, then ERROR CODES, then Display Errors, and choose Reset Errors. The code can sit in the list until you do that, even if the brewer now reads correctly.
Affected models and control systems
This covers the FETCO CBS-2151XTS, CBS-2152XTS and CBS-2152-2XTS brewers, from the User's Guide for those models. Water-level advice such as short potting belongs to the fill codes 100 and 101, not to 051.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- 051 appears in the error list
- The brewer does not heat the tank or stops mid-cycle
- Tank temperature does not rise as expected
- The code returns after power cycling
Possible causes
Listed in FETCO's documentation
- Bad probe connection
- Probe failure
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 051 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- The probe connector at the control end has worked loose or corroded from steam
- The probe lead has a break inside its insulation near a bend
- Mineral scale on the probe tip is insulating it from the water
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the brewer off and let the tank cool.
- Skip repeated power cycling, which will not clear this kind of error on this brewer.
- Note whether 051 appeared right after cleaning or moving the brewer, which would point to a disturbed connection.
- Tell the technician the code is 051 (open), and that you have not reset it, so they see the original record.
How a technician diagnoses error code 051
- Read the error list and confirm 051, not 050 or a water-level code.
- Inspect and reseat the probe connection with the brewer isolated.
- Measure probe resistance and compare it with the specification; an open reads infinite.
- Replace the probe if it is open and the connection is sound.
- Reset errors in the menu and run a heat-up to confirm normal tank temperature.
- The connections sit near the tank and heater wiring
- A reseat that appears to fix it can hide a lead that is breaking inside
- Probe replacement is the manual's repair when the connections are good
How error code 051 differs from similar codes
051 starts with a connection check, while 050 goes straight to probe replacement; the two readings are opposite electrical conditions.

What should I check first on 051?
The manual says to check all connections first and replace the probe if necessary. That work is done with the brewer isolated.
Is 051 about water level?
No. Water flow and level advice belongs to codes 100 and 101. 051 concerns only the temperature probe circuit.
Will resetting errors be enough?
Only if the cause is gone. A reset clears the record, but an open probe will post 051 again at the next heat-up.
