After the control opens the drain, it times how long the tub takes to empty. On the Quantum topload the limit is 185 seconds, and on the CHM495R the control compares against the average drain time. If the tub empties more slowly than that, "E Sd" is shown. On the QN models the right-most decimal point lights as well, and that marker is what the START-key step clears. Cycles take longer, and the spin may wait on water. This is a warning that the drain is getting slower, not a complete stop like a drain-time failure, which makes it useful: it shows the problem while the washer still works.
