Huebsch Washer Error Code E SH: Shorted Temperature Sensor
E SH on Huebsch Quantum frontloads, QN and CHM495R washer-extractors means the temperature sensor circuit reads shorted, as if the thermistor wires touched. Open the door or press any key to clear the message on the QN, and see whether the wash finishes at the right water temperature. If the message repeats, book service with us.
Medium: washing continues, but heated programs run without heat.
What does Huebsch error code E SH mean?
The control reads the temperature sensor as a resistance. When the wires of the thermistor touch, or the sensor is damaged, the resistance collapses and the circuit reads shorted, so the display shows "E SH". On heated machines the control turns the heater off and the cycle goes on, and the QN models show the message at the end of the cycle. The CHM495R manual puts it as the control sensing above 212 F, which is the same shorted reading seen as extreme heat. Customers notice cooler water than programmed. The manual lists a thermistor that is damaged or soaked so its reading collapses, a temperature sensor wire pinched against the cabinet or frame, and a damaged connector on the sensor lead causing a short. The control stops heating because it believes the water is already boiling, which is why the water runs cool.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers Huebsch Quantum frontload washers in the FLW1535C family, QN washer-extractors with the CHM1792C control and CHM495R-family washer-extractors with a heating element.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Water cooler than the program calls for
- "E SH" shown at the end of the cycle on QN models
- The cycle completes but heated steps seem ineffective
Possible causes
Listed in Huebsch's documentation
- Thermistor damaged or soaked so its reading collapses
- Sensor wire pinched against the cabinet or frame
- Damaged connector on the sensor lead causing a short
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SH on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A wire rubbed through its insulation by contact with a moving part
- Water that has entered the sensor connector after cleaning with a hose
Safe checks before calling for service
- Open the door or press any key to clear the message, following the QN manual.
- See whether the wash finishes with the right water temperature.
- Leave the sensor and its wires alone.
- If the message repeats, book service with us and tell us whether heated programs are cooler.
How a technician diagnoses error code E SH
- Read the code and the programmed temperature.
- Measure the thermistor resistance at the sensor and at the control.
- Inspect the wire run for a pinch or chafe against the frame.
- Check the connector for moisture or damage.
- Repair the wire or replace the sensor only after the readings show the short.
- Tracing a pinched wire means opening the cabinet around live heater circuits.
- Resistance readings need to be compared with the maker's temperature values.
- A damaged sensor lead has to be repaired properly so it does not short again.
How error code E SH differs from similar codes
E SH is a shorted sensor circuit. E oP is the opposite case, an open circuit, and E Ht is a heater that never reached temperature.

Related Huebsch washer error codes
Why is the water cool if it says above 212 F?
The reading is false. The control believes the water is hot and turns the heater off.
Will it wash my load anyway?
Yes, the cycle goes on with the heater off.
Is it the same as E oP?
No. E SH is shorted, while E oP is open.
