Huebsch Washer Error Code Err: Coin Error

Err is a coin error on Huebsch Quantum topload washers, timer-type toploads and CHM495R washer-extractors. The control saw an invalid coin pulse or the coin sensor is not working, so check the slot for a stuck coin and try one clean coin.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the washer cannot take payment, so it is out of use until the coin path is fixed.

What does Huebsch error code Err mean?

Coin-operated Huebsch washers count each coin as an electrical pulse from a sensor in the coin drop. The control compares what it receives with what it expects. If the pulse looks invalid, or the sensor gives none, it shows Err for a coin error. The timer-type control with the EDC electronic control adds a coin drop obstruction or tampering to the list. Customers see coins that are not credited, so the washer will not start. Bent coins, debris in the slide, a dirty sensor or damaged wiring to the coin drop sit behind it. This page covers three control families, so the exact steps differ a little, but the idea is the same everywhere: the machine is refusing to trust the money path. Because tampering is one of the possible reasons, a machine that shows Err repeatedly should be taken out of service until the coin drop has been looked at.

Affected models and control systems

This covers Huebsch Quantum topload washers in the TLW13C family, timer-type toploads with the EDC electronic control (Micro-wand IIIe), and CHM495R-family washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Err shows after a coin is dropped
  • The washer does not credit coins and will not start
  • A coin drops back or sticks in the slide

Possible causes

Listed in Huebsch's documentation

  • Obstruction in the coin slide or drop
  • Coin sensor dirty or out of alignment
  • Wiring between the coin drop and the control damaged
  • Tampering at the coin drop

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Err on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A foreign token or bent coin lodged where the sensor reads the pulse
  • Detergent spray that dried on the sensor and blocks the beam

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check the coin slot and the coin return for a stuck coin or token, without forcing a tool into it.
  2. Try one clean coin if the washer accepts coins and watch the display.
  3. Tag the washer out of service if it still rejects coins.
  4. Note the exact display text and tell us when you contact us.

How a technician diagnoses error code Err

  1. Read the code and confirm Err returns with a clean coin.
  2. Inspect the coin slide and drop for debris, bent parts or signs of tampering.
  3. Clean and align the coin sensor.
  4. Check the wiring between the coin drop and the control for continuity with the power locked off.
  5. Replace the coin drop or sensor board only after the pulse signal tests bad.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Opening the coin drop exposes wiring that connects to the control on a machine fed by live 208 to 240 V.
  • Tampering damage can involve the cash box and the control, so it is handled with care and a record.
  • Reading the coin pulse needs a meter and the maker's wiring diagram for the control family.

How error code Err differs from similar codes

Err is the coin error on all three controls. The oFF message on Quantum washers is a break-in shutdown, which can follow vault or door switch alarms.
