Hussmann Display Refrigerator Error Code E1: Case Temperature Sensor Failed

E1 means the case (merchandiser) temperature sensor has failed or is disconnected, and refrigeration runs continuously. Call for service immediately. Until then, the manual says to turn the case off, or repeat a duty cycle of a few minutes on and a few minutes off.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the case sensor is lost and refrigeration runs continuously, which can freeze product.

What does Hussmann error code E1 mean?

The Safe-NET III controller in an LTH low-temperature merchandiser uses a case temperature sensor to know when the case is cold enough and to cycle refrigeration. When that sensor fails or is disconnected, the controller loses its measurement and cannot tell when to stop cooling. The manual states that refrigeration then runs continuously, and that E1 appears on the temperature display with the red alarm LED flashing. Running continuously is the controller's safe fallback for product, but it also means the case keeps getting colder, which can freeze product and ice the coil. This is why the manual's advice is direct: check the display for E1 or E2, call service immediately, and meanwhile turn the case off or repeat a duty cycle of a few minutes on and a few minutes off. The manual does not describe a reset the operator can use.

What you may notice

  • E1 on the temperature display
  • Red alarm LED flashing
  • Case getting colder than normal because cooling does not stop
  • Frost building on the product or coil

Possible causes

Listed in Hussmann's documentation

  • Case sensor failed or disconnected

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Case sensor cable pulled loose when product was loaded or the case was cleaned
  • Sensor lead damaged where it passes through the case wall or trim
  • Moisture or ice around the sensor connector
  • Controller input failing to read a sensor that is in good condition

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Do not clear or ignore the code. Note E1 and the flashing red LED on the display.
  2. Call for service immediately, as the manual directs.
  3. Until service arrives, turn the case off, or repeat a duty cycle of a few minutes on and a few minutes off, as the manual says.
  4. Check product at the bottom and rear of the case for freezing, and tell the technician what you saw.

How a technician diagnoses error code E1

  1. Read E1 and confirm the red LED is flashing, and check for E2.
  2. Locate the case sensor and inspect its connector and lead.
  3. Measure sensor resistance against the chart with the sensor disconnected.
  4. Check the controller input for a proper sensor reading.
  5. Replace the sensor or lead, then confirm the controller cycles refrigeration normally.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The sensor connects inside the case and controller area, which carry line voltage.
  • Running the case with no sensor can damage product and the coil, so repair should be quick.
  • Confirming a sensor failure versus a controller input problem needs meter readings.
