What does Kolpak EXTERNAL ALARM 1 mean?

The stand-alone Deluxe Display lets an input be chosen as an external alarm. The input is a simple contact: it is either in its normal state or active. When an input selected for this purpose becomes active, the Display shows the text alarm EXTERNAL ALARM 1, 2, OR 3 in the Alarms & Variables menu. The manual combines the three into one entry, so the wording does not identify which of the three inputs is active. It also does not name the device on the input. That depends on the installation: it could be a switch on other equipment or a monitoring relay. The alarm is therefore a pointer to something outside the Display. The manual's only guidance is to scroll the Alarms & Variables menu to see active alarms, and it lists a DISP CLEAR ALARM variable for clearing alarms set in the Deluxe Display. Clearing it does not change the outside device.

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind EXTERNAL ALARM 1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Outside device on one of the alarm inputs reporting a genuine condition
  • Contact stuck in the active position
  • Input still selected as an external alarm after the device was removed
  • Loose wire at an alarm input shorting it

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Scroll the Alarms & Variables menu to see which input is active, and write it down.
  2. Find out what is wired to that input from labels or the job notes.
  3. Check that device from outside for a warning light or tripped switch.
  4. Give the technician the alarm name, the input number if shown and the device.

How a technician diagnoses EXTERNAL ALARM 1

  1. Read the active alarms and the input selections.
  2. Identify the device on the active input and read its state.
  3. Meter the input to confirm it is active.
  4. Lift the field wire to see whether the alarm clears.
  5. Fix the device or wiring, or deselect the input if nothing belongs there.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Input terminals sit inside the powered Display housing.
  • A device tied to an alarm input may protect equipment and should not be bypassed.
  • Changing which inputs act as alarms is programming that must match the installation.

EXTERNAL ALARM 1Questions about Kolpak EXTERNAL ALARM 1
Does the alarm say which input is active?

That variable clears alarms set in the Display, but the alarm returns if the outside device is still active.
