Kolpak Walk-In Cooler Error Code SHORT COMP CYCLE: Compressor Starting Too Often

SHORT COMP CYCLE means the compressor started an excessive number of times to maintain suction pressure. A compressor that starts and stops too often is a sign that something is wrong with pressure control. Press ENTER to silence the alarm for one hour and have the system checked.

Medium · inspection needed

High: repeated compressor starts shorten compressor life even though the room may still cool.

What does Kolpak SHORT COMP CYCLE mean?

A compressor should run in reasonable stretches. Starting is the hardest moment for it, so controllers count starts. On the ArcticFox controller, when the compressor has to start an excessive number of times to hold suction pressure, the controller posts the text alarm SHORT COMP CYCLE in the Alarms menu. The manual does not give the count or the time window, only that it is excessive. The check applies to suction pressure control, so it points at how pressure behaves at the compressor rather than at room temperature. Short cycling can happen when refrigerant charge, a control setting, or a pressure device is out of line. The controller does not shut the system down because of the alarm. It reports the pattern, and the alarm sounds again after the one-hour silence if short cycling continues.

Affected models and control systems

ArcticFox OEM Controller with Deluxe Display on Kolpak walk-ins. The manual lists this alarm in the Alarms menu on page 16 and does not limit it to specific models.

What you may notice

  • SHORT COMP CYCLE text in the Alarms menu
  • Audible alarm from the display
  • Condensing unit clicking on and off at short intervals
  • Room temperature swinging more than usual

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind SHORT COMP CYCLE on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Low refrigerant charge letting suction pressure drop quickly and cut the compressor off
  • Pressure differential set too tight so the compressor chatters around its setpoint
  • Suction pressure transducer or switch reading erratically
  • Evaporator airflow restricted by ice or blocked fans, changing the load on the compressor

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Press ENTER to silence the alarm for 1 hour. It returns if short cycling continues.
  2. Listen to the outdoor or rooftop unit and count how often it starts over ten minutes. Write the number down.
  3. Look at the walk-in door and make sure product is not blocking the evaporator airflow.
  4. Give the technician the alarm text and the start frequency you noted.

How a technician diagnoses SHORT COMP CYCLE

  1. Read the suction pressure settings and the alarm count threshold from the controller.
  2. Install gauges and watch suction pressure through several compressor cycles.
  3. Check refrigerant charge using sight glass, superheat and subcooling.
  4. Test the pressure transducer or switch against the gauge reading.
  5. Adjust settings or repair the charge or sensor, then observe a full run to confirm normal cycle length.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Refrigerant charge checks require gauges and a licensed technician under federal refrigerant rules.
  • Compressor contactors and terminals carry line voltage and must be tested live.
  • Changing pressure setpoints without measurements can leave the room warm or overload the compressor.

SHORT COMP CYCLEQuestions about Kolpak SHORT COMP CYCLE
Why is short cycling a problem?

Each start is hard on a compressor, and many starts in a short time shorten its life.

Is SHORT COMP CYCLE the same as LOW PRESSURE?

No. SHORT COMP CYCLE counts compressor starts, while LOW PRESSURE counts drops of suction pressure below the expected point. They can appear together.

Can I keep using the walk-in?

Usually the room keeps cooling, but have it checked soon since the compressor is being stressed.
