McCall Commercial Refrigerator Display DEF: Defrost Cycle
DEF on a McCall Series I freezer is not an error. After the control initializes it enters defrost, and the display reads DEF for up to about 45 minutes before it shows temperature again. No action is needed; wait for the cycle to finish.
Low: a normal defrost display; no action is needed.

What does McCall error code DEF mean?
A freezer needs to clear frost from its evaporator, and the electronic control does that in a defrost cycle. When the control initializes, for example at start-up, it enters defrost and shows DEF. The initial defrost can take up to 15 minutes, and then the display continues to read DEF for about 30 minutes before it goes back to showing temperature. After a normal defrost the display reads dEF until the evaporator returns to normal temperatures, which can take up to 15 minutes. Separate from this, the control delays all operations at start-up for up to 10 minutes and shows neither temperature nor errors until its self-check is complete. The manual says no action is needed and to wait for the cycle to finish. A reading that never leaves DEF would be a matter for service.

What you may notice
- DEF or dEF on the display instead of temperature
- Display blank for a few minutes at start-up
- Temperature coming back after the cycle ends
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code DEF on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Control initializing and entering a defrost cycle
- Normal defrost until the evaporator returns to normal temperature
- Power interruptions that restart the control and its defrost
- Door left open so the evaporator frosts faster
- Heavy product loading that lengthens recovery
Safe checks before calling for service
- Wait for the cycle to finish; the display should return to temperature.
- Do not open the door unnecessarily while DEF is showing.
- Note how long DEF stays on.
- If it is still showing after an hour and a half, call for service.
How a technician diagnoses error code DEF
- Ask when the control was last powered up.
- Check that the display returns to temperature after defrost.
- Verify the defrost termination and evaporator temperature.
- Check the door seal and the frost pattern on the evaporator.
- Test the defrost heater and control if the cycle does not end.
- Defrost heater and termination checks involve live heater wiring.
- Judging whether the cycle is stuck takes measured evaporator temperatures.
How error code DEF differs from similar codes
DEF here is a normal defrost display on the freezer; it is not one of the E error read-outs.
