McCall Cabinets in Service

McCall equipment is older now, and we find it in kitchens that never replaced it. We service the Series I reach-in refrigerators with aluminum interiors, the MCCR one-, two- and three-section models, and the MCCH heated cabinets from the same family. The MCL reach-ins, with numbers like 1-1020, 2-2020 and 4-4020, are the others we see. They come in pass-thru and glass-door versions, and there are L1-1001 style roll-ins for 65 and 72 inch carts and DT dual-temperature cabinets.

Controls vary. Many MCL cabinets use a mechanical knob, sometimes with a digital thermometer, and the roll-ins use an electronic panel. Series I units have an electronic temperature control with a digital display.

Checks on an Older McCall

A blank display or a wrong reading sends us to the fuse, breaker, main switch and probe wire. LLL or HHH on the thermometer means it needs calibration. On Series I freezers, a DEF message after power returns is normal start-up, and the control waits up to 10 minutes before it begins its cycles, so a quiet cabinet is not always a dead one. A new refrigerator is set near 38 degrees F, and any adjustment takes about 8 hours to show.

Turning the knob too cold can ice the evaporator and warm the cabinet. A dirty condenser causes the same complaint, especially in hot kitchens. We tell you honestly whether a McCall is worth repairing, and the price is in writing before we start.

FAQMcCall questions
My McCall freezer shows DEF after the power came back. Is that a problem?

On Series I cabinets, DEF after power returns is normal start-up. Give it time. If the cabinet is still warm after several hours, call us.

Why did my McCall cabinet get warmer after I turned the knob colder?

An over-cold setting can ice the evaporator coil, which blocks the air and warms the cabinet. Return the knob to the middle and call us if the ice stays.

Is it worth repairing an old McCall refrigerator?

Often yes, when the cabinet is solid and the problem is a probe, control or condenser. We tell you plainly if the repair costs more than the cabinet is worth.
