Milnor Coin Washer-Extractor Error Code E7: Input Present at Power-Up

E7 followed by a number on a Milnor MCR coin washer-extractor means one input was already active when the washer powered up, when it should not have been. The number names the input, so write it down before doing anything else. Check that nothing is pressing the key or button it names, switch the washer off and on, and call us with the number if it stays.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the washer will not run, but the cause is often a stuck button that is simple to find.

Milnor MCR coin washer-extractor controller (7-formula coin control)

What does Milnor E7 with input number mean?

When a coin-operated Milnor washer-extractor with the 7-formula coin control is switched on, it first reads all of its inputs and expects every one of them to be idle. If an input is already active, the controller treats it as a stuck switch or a short and shows E7 with an input number. On this display the message reads E7 with input number, and the number is the useful part. Zero is the attendant key, 3 the quarter count, 5 the dollar count, 6 the level switch, 7 the vibration switch, 8 the select button and 9 the start button. So E7 followed by 9 points at the start button and E7 followed by 6 at the level switch. The control will not run with a questionable input because it cannot trust what that input is telling it.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the Milnor MCR coin washer-extractor controller with the 7-formula coin control, as listed in technical reference MTCEIR01. The input numbers belong to this controller only.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E7 and a single digit on the display at power-up
  • The washer will not start a cycle
  • A button, key or coin slot that looks pressed or jammed
  • Customers cannot select a formula

Possible causes

Listed in Milnor's documentation

  • The input named by the number is active
  • Stuck buttons or switches
  • Wiring shorted on that input
  • Failed controller input circuit

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind E7 with input number on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Coin or debris lodged behind the start or select button, holding it closed
  • Attendant key switch left turned or worn so it stays made
  • Water or detergent that got into a button membrane after hose-down cleaning

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Write down the number shown after E7.
  2. Look at the button or key it names and make sure nothing is pressing or holding it.
  3. Switch the washer off, wait a minute and switch it on again.
  4. If E7 returns with the same number, call us to schedule service and tell us that number and whether the machine was recently cleaned.

How a technician diagnoses E7 with input number

  1. Read the E7 input number and match it to the input list.
  2. Inspect the named device for a stuck mechanism, a jammed coin or moisture.
  3. With power locked out, check the wiring on that input for a short to ground or to another wire.
  4. Test the switch itself with a meter to confirm it opens when released.
  5. Check the controller input circuit if the device and wiring test normal.
  6. Replace the failed switch or board only after the test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Testing a switch input means working near live low-voltage and line-voltage circuits in the control area.
  • A shorted input wire can sit inside the harness, where it takes tracing with a meter.
  • Replacing a controller board without proving the input circuit fails risks a repeat call and an unneeded bill.

How E7 with input number differs from similar codes

Each digit after E7 is a different device, so E7 with 6 and E7 with 9 are separate repairs even though the code looks the same.
