Montague Induction Range Error Code E03: Heat Sink Overheated
E03 on a Montague Legend induction range, or three short flashes, means the heat sink is overheated because the air-cooling system is obstructed. The unit stops working immediately. Let it cool, check that the vents are clear and clean the air filter.
High: the unit stops immediately and will not cook until it cools and the airflow is restored.
What does Montague error code E03 mean?
An induction unit's electronics produce heat and shed it through a heat sink that is cooled by a fan and the airflow through the range's vents and filter. A temperature sensor watches the heat sink. If the heat sink gets too hot, the control shuts the induction unit down at once to protect the power electronics, and shows E03 or three short flashes on the indicator lamp. The manual's troubleshooting chart on page 13 says the cause is an overheated internal heat sink because the air-cooling system is obstructed, and that the unit stops working immediately. Its actions are to let the unit cool down, verify that the air vents are not obstructed, clean the air filter and contact a service agency. A grease-laden filter or blocked vent is the clearest operator-level cause, because restricted airflow lets the heat sink warm up quickly.
Affected models and control systems
Montague Legend electric ranges with induction units: V136EO-4I, C36-4I, RB-36-SC/R, 36-4I and M36-4I. The manual lists E03 in the Troubleshooting Chart with Error Code and Indicator Lamp Flash Code on page 13, with an induction note on page 9.

What you may notice
- E03 shows, or the lamp gives three short flashes
- The induction zones shut off in the middle of cooking
- The cooling fan runs loudly or the range feels hot around the vents
Possible causes
Listed in Montague's documentation
- Air-cooling system obstructed
- Internal heat sink overheated
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E03 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Air filter clogged with kitchen grease
- Vents blocked by pans, shelves or equipment pushed against the range
- Cooling fan slow or stopped
- Heavy back-to-back cooking without a pause for the unit to cool
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the unit off and let it cool down fully before trying again.
- Check that the air vents on the range are clear and nothing is blocking them.
- Remove and clean the air filter as the manual describes, if it is within reach and the unit is off.
- Restart. If E03 returns quickly, note how long the unit cooked before it stopped and tell the technician.
How a technician diagnoses error code E03
- Read the code and ask how long the unit ran before it stopped.
- Check the air filter, vents and the space around the range for airflow restriction.
- Check the cooling fan for rotation and speed once the unit is isolated.
- Check the heat sink's temperature sensor and its connection.
- Replace the fan or the sensor only after a failed test, then run a cooking test and confirm the unit stays cool.
- The cooling fan and heat sink sit with the power electronics, so reaching them means opening a live-supply appliance.
- A heat sink that overheats repeatedly can damage the induction module.
How error code E03 differs from similar codes
E03 is the heat sink overheating from blocked airflow. E06 or E30 are ambient heat or an overheated internal part. Both stop the unit.

Can I restart right after E03?
Let the unit cool first. The manual says to let it cool down, check the vents and clean the filter.
Why does the unit stop at once?
The manual says it stops working immediately, to protect the electronics from overheating.
Is E03 the same as E04?
No. E04 is an overheated cooking zone or its sensor. E03 is the heat sink with blocked airflow.
