Perlick Bar Refrigerator Error Code E2: Evaporator Probe Error
A flashing E2 means the evaporator temperature probe has an error, which the controller uses to manage defrost. Check the cabinet temperature with a thermometer and keep bottles from blocking the back wall airflow. Call us for a probe replacement and a defrost check.
Medium: the cabinet still cools, but defrost control is lost, so cooling can degrade as frost builds.

What does Perlick error code E2 mean?
The evaporator is the cold coil at the back of the cabinet, and frost builds on it as the compressor runs. The digital controller manages defrost using a probe on that coil, and on the chiller models defrost runs automatically every four hours. The controller reads the coil probe to know when to start and when the coil has cleared. When that probe is missing or reads outside a believable range, the controller flashes E2. Without a good coil reading, defrost can no longer be judged properly, frost can accumulate, airflow across the coil drops, and the cabinet slowly warms during busy service. Drinks near the front or on the upper shelves may warm up first. The maker lists a loose evaporator probe plug on the controller, a damaged evaporator probe wire, heavy frost on the coil, and a defrost that does not clear ice from the coil. The last two may be a result of the first two, or may be separate. The compartment probe has its own code, E1.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to Perlick HB, HC and HD 24-inch undercounter refrigerators with the digital controller, per the Z2363 troubleshooting table. The four-hour automatic defrost is described for the chiller models.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E2 flashing on the controller
- Frost or ice visible on the back wall
- Drinks slowly warming over a shift
- Weaker airflow from the evaporator area
Possible causes
Listed in Perlick's documentation
- Loose evaporator probe plug on the controller
- Damaged evaporator probe wire
- Heavy frost on the evaporator coil
- Defrost that does not clear ice from the coil
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E2 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Frequent door openings in humid air that load the coil with frost faster than defrost removes it
- Bottles pressed against the coil that insulate the probe from the coil temperature
- Probe wire hardened or cracked by repeated cold and warm cycles
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check the cabinet temperature with a thermometer.
- Keep bottles from blocking the back wall airflow.
- Check the probe plug only if it is visible without tools, and do not unplug anything while the unit is on.
- Note how much frost you see and the thermometer reading for the service call.
How a technician diagnoses error code E2
- Read the code and confirm E2 rather than E1.
- Check how much frost is on the coil and whether the fan moves air across it.
- Inspect the evaporator probe, its wire and the plug at the controller.
- Measure the probe resistance at a known coil temperature.
- Run a manual defrost and watch whether the coil clears.
- Replace the probe, then confirm defrost ends correctly and the cabinet recovers.
- The evaporator probe sits at the cold coil, and getting to it means opening the cabinet interior and handling refrigerant-side parts.
- A forced defrost involves heater wiring that carries line voltage.
- Heavy ice can hide a failed defrost circuit, which needs a meter to prove.
How error code E2 differs from similar codes
E2 is the evaporator probe and E1 is the compartment probe on the same controller.

Related Perlick bar refrigeration error codes
Why does the evaporator have a probe?
The controller watches coil temperature to know when defrost has finished. A lost probe makes defrost timing unreliable and frost can stay on the coil.
How often does the unit defrost?
The chiller models defrost automatically every four hours, as the manual describes.
Can I chip the ice off?
No. Chipping can damage the coil. Let a technician handle it.
