Polar King Walk-In Cooler Alarm EXCESS DEFROST: Three Quick Defrosts

EXCESS DEFROST is an alarm on the KE2 evaporator control: three consecutive defrosts occurred with less than one hour between each. The document gives no repair steps. Frequent defrosts suggest the coil is icing fast, so look at the coil, the door and the drain.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: repeated defrost warms the box and wastes energy, though it does not stop the unit.

What does Polar King EXCESS DEFROST mean?

A walk-in evaporator is defrosted at intervals, normally several hours apart. The KE2 Evaporator Efficiency board counts how often it happens. When three consecutive defrosts occur with less than one hour between each, the Alarms Status Menu lists EXCESS DEFROST. The Combo Display shows the name; the Basic Display shows a red or yellow light. The installation instructions state this trigger only. They give no cause, no steps, and mention the CLEAR ALARMS menu item for clearing. The alarm means defrost is being called for again and again. That pattern can be a sign that the coil is being loaded with moisture quickly, that defrost is ending before the ice has cleared, or that something is calling for defrost too soon. The document does not choose among these.

Affected models and control systems

Polar King walk-in coolers and freezers fitted with the KE2 Evaporator Efficiency Evap OEM board, with either the Basic Display or the Combo Display. The alarm is listed in the Alarms Status Menu, which is view only, on page 14 of the KE2 installation instructions.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Red or yellow light on the Basic Display
  • EXCESS DEFROST on the Combo Display
  • Frequent fan stops and heater noise
  • Ice on the coil or in the drain pan

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind EXCESS DEFROST on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A door gasket or curtain letting humid air in so the coil frosts fast
  • A drain line frozen so water refreezes under the coil
  • A defrost that ends before the ice melts, which then calls for another
  • Stock stacked tight against the evaporator, cutting airflow

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Look at the door gasket and strip curtain for gaps.
  2. Check the evaporator cover for ice, without chipping at it.
  3. Look under the coil for ice in the drain pan area.
  4. Clear the alarm with CLEAR ALARMS. If EXCESS DEFROST returns, note how often the box defrosts and arrange service.

How a technician diagnoses EXCESS DEFROST

  1. Read the alarm and the defrost history and settings.
  2. Check the door seals, curtain and heater cable for air leaks.
  3. Check the drain line and heater for ice and function.
  4. Check defrost termination and the coil sensor.
  5. Correct the moisture source or the termination, then watch several cycles.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The defrost heaters and drain heater are wired to line voltage, and testing them needs power off or live meter work. Defrost timing and termination are control settings tied to the box. A frozen drain or a heater failure sits behind the coil cover.

How EXCESS DEFROST differs from similar codes

EXCESS DEFROST is about too many defrosts in a short time, whereas DEFR TERM ON TIME is about defrosts that end on the timer instead of on temperature.
