Schaerer Coffee Machine Error: Center or Right Grinder Overloaded
The Schaerer Soul shows that the center grinder (standard) or the right grinder (variant) is overloaded or blocked, and drinks from that grinder stop. Switch the machine off and look for a visible foreign object, by hand only. Restart once, and call us if it recurs.
High: drinks from the affected grinder are blocked until the cause is cleared.

What does Schaerer Center grinder mean?
The display shows Center grinder (standard), right grinder (variant) overloaded or blocked when the grinder motor current rose above 8 amps for a set time. The control does not give up at once. It retried grinding five times, hoping a light jam would clear, and only then blocked drinks from that grinder to protect the motor from running against a stuck object. A stone, a screw or other hard item mixed in with the beans is the usual cause, along with compacted beans or worn burrs that need more force to turn. The manual lists a foreign object in the beans, compacted beans, burr wear, and grinder motor load. Staff see drinks from that grinder stop while other grinders may still serve. Because the grinder and brewing unit can crush, nobody should reach in while the machine is on. The safe first step is to switch off, check what you can see by hand from the hopper side, and restart.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the Schaerer Soul, described in the operating instructions dated 04-2026. The right grinder is a variant fitting, and other Schaerer models word grinder messages differently.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Overload message naming the center or right grinder
- Drinks from that grinder unavailable
- Grinder runs loudly then stops
- Beans stay in the hopper without grinding
Possible causes
Listed in Schaerer's documentation
- Foreign object in the beans
- Compacted beans in the grinder
- Grinder burrs are worn
- Grinder motor load is high
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind Center grinder on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Hard shell fragments from a bag of flavored or oily beans
- A loose hopper fitting letting beans bridge over the grinder inlet
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off.
- Check the grinder for a blockage and remove foreign objects you can see, by hand only.
- Restart the machine.
- Never reach into the grinder while the machine is on.
- If it recurs, call us and tell us which grinder it was and which beans were in the hopper.
How a technician diagnoses Center grinder
- Read the message history to confirm which grinder overloaded and how often.
- With power isolated, remove the beans and inspect the grinder chamber.
- Check the burrs for wear and the gap for foreign material.
- Measure motor current during a test grind and compare it against the 8 amp limit.
- Replace burrs or the motor only after the current test, then run test grinds.
- Grinder burrs and the brewing unit can crush, so clearing them needs the machine isolated.
- Checking motor current means working beside live mains wiring.

Why did it retry five times?
The machine tries again to clear a light jam by itself. After five attempts it stops and blocks drinks to protect the motor.
Can I remove a stone myself?
Only with the machine off and only by hand from the hopper side. If you cannot see it, call us.
What if it happens often?
Frequent overloads point to worn burrs or beans carrying hard bits, and we would inspect the grinder.
