What does Southbend error code F8 mean?

F8 completes the group of codes F1, F5, F6 and F8, which the manual describes as a bad temperature controller. The repair is the same for each: replace the temperature controller. The manual attributes F8 to the controller itself, so the settings are not the cause. The manual does not say what separates F8 from the other three, so we do not invent a difference. The useful step for an operator is to power the oven off for a minute, because a brief disturbance can clear a one-off. The useful step for a technician is to check the power and connections first. If F8 returns on a clean restart, the controller is replaced, matching the version for gas or electric ovens.

Affected models and control systems

Southbend Marathoner Gold and SilverStar gas convection ovens, programmable and rack-timer models (GB/15PC, SLGB/15SC), and Southbend electric convection ovens EB/10PC, programmable and rack-timer models.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • F8 appears on the control display
  • The oven stops heating
  • The oven may restart and show F8 again

Possible causes

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the oven off for at least a minute, then on again.
  2. Check that no other equipment on the circuit tripped at the same time.
  3. Do not try to reprogram the controls.
  4. If F8 returns, write down the model and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code F8

  1. Read the code and confirm it is F8.
  2. Check the supply and the circuit for disturbances.
  3. Inspect the controller connections.
  4. Power cycle and observe the code.
  5. Confirm the right controller for the model.
  6. Replace the temperature controller.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Electrical disturbances need meter checks on the oven circuit.
  • The controller is replaced behind the panel with mains voltage nearby.
  • Gas and electric versions have different controllers, so the correct part has to be matched to the model, and the new controller is run through a heating cycle to confirm it holds temperature.

How error code F8 differs from similar codes

F8 has the same cause and remedy as F1, F5 and F6.
