Turbo Air Freezer Error Code D1: Defrost Sensor Problem
D1 on a Turbo Air TSF freezer controller means the D-sensor, the defrost sensor, has shorted or disconnected. The controller defrosts on a fixed timer until it is repaired. Check temperature, watch for frost on the back wall, and call us.
Medium: defrost is running without feedback, so frost or warming can develop.

What does Turbo Air error code D1 mean?
D1 appears on models like the TSF-23SD-N and TSF-49SD-N when the controller can no longer read the D-sensor on the evaporator coil. With D1 on, the defrost heater runs for at least 20 minutes no matter what the D-sensor reads. It goes off sooner if the F-sensor reads above 28.4 F, and if the F-sensor is also in error, the heater runs 20 minutes. The controller is guessing when the coil has melted, so frost can build if defrost ends early, and a longer heater run warms the freezer more than needed. The cabinet keeps working in the meantime. A technician checks the D-sensor and its lead on the coil, the wiring and connection to the controller, any ice damage, and then the D-sensor input.

What you may notice
- D1 on the controller display
- Frost building on the back wall
- Defrost that seems short or long
- Freezer temperature rising after defrost
Possible causes
Listed in Turbo Air's documentation
- The D-sensor on the evaporator coil
- Wiring and connection between the sensor and controller
- Ice damage to the sensor lead
- The D-sensor input on the controller
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code D1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A sensor lead frozen into a block of ice and fractured
- A connector corroded by condensation
- A sensor displaced from the coil during earlier service
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check freezer temperature with a thermometer.
- Look for frost building on the back wall without touching the coil.
- Keep the door shut as much as possible.
- Call us to schedule service if D1 stays on.
- Tell us how long the frost has been building.
How a technician diagnoses error code D1
- Read the code and confirm freezer temperature.
- Inspect the D-sensor and its lead at the coil.
- Measure the sensor resistance and check for a short or open.
- Check the wiring and connector to the controller.
- Run a manual defrost and watch how it ends.
- Replace the sensor, then the controller only if the input fails.
- Defrost heaters run on line voltage in the evaporator housing.
- Chipping ice can puncture the coil.
- Measuring a sensor and a defrost cycle needs instruments and the TSF's own data.
How error code D1 differs from similar codes
On TSR refrigerators D1 uses a fixed 30 minute on and 30 minute off cycle instead of the TSF heater timing.

What does the freezer do with D1?
It runs the defrost heater for at least 20 minutes regardless of the sensor, ending sooner if the F-sensor reads above 28.4 F.
Is the food at risk?
Check with a thermometer. A defrost that ends early or runs long can change the temperature.
Can I clear D1?
No. It stays until the sensor circuit is repaired.
