Ultrafryer Commercial Fryer FILTER Prompt: Time to Filter the Oil
FILTER on an Ultrafryer with the UltraStat 23 controller is a reminder that the oil is due for filtering, not a breakdown. Press ENTER/EXIT FILTER to clear it or start the filter routine from the owner's manual. If the prompt returns at once or the filter cycle stalls, the pump or valve needs a look.
Low: an operator reminder; the fryer keeps running while the prompt shows.

What does Ultrafryer FILTER prompt mean?
The UltraStat 23 tracks how much the vat has cooked, and when the oil is due for filtering it shows FILTER. This is a prompt, so the fryer keeps working while it is on screen. Pressing ENTER/EXIT FILTER clears it, and holding SCAN and ENTER/EXIT FILTER together for 3 seconds forces a filter on demand. The control only wants to know you have seen the reminder, then it starts counting again. A prompt that comes straight back is different. It suggests the filter routine is not completing, which can happen when the pan, pad or seals are not seated, when the pump or its motor is weak, or when the valve and the switch that reads its position disagree. Oil stays hot throughout, so never filter outside the maker's procedure.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the Ultrafryer P30-14-UCP with the UltraStat 23 controller, as described on page 8 of the UltraStat 23 manual.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- FILTER on the controller display
- Prompt returning soon after it was cleared
- Filter cycle that stops partway through
Possible causes
Listed in Ultrafryer's documentation
- The filter pan, pad and seals
- The filter pump and its motor
- The filter valve and the switch that reads its position
- The controller prompt settings
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind FILTER prompt on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A filter pad that is clogged or folded, so oil cannot pass and the cycle never finishes
- A pan not fully seated against its seals, so the filter looks incomplete
- Several busy shifts without filtering, so the reminder keeps returning
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press ENTER/EXIT FILTER to clear the prompt, or follow the filter routine in the owner's manual.
- Only start a filter cycle when the oil is within the temperature the manual allows.
- Check the pan is seated and the pad is clean.
- Never filter hot oil outside the maker's procedure.
- If the prompt returns right away, note how many batches ran since the last filter and call us.
How a technician diagnoses FILTER prompt
- Ask how often the fryer is filtered and what happened after the last attempt.
- Check the pan, pad and seals, and look for a collapsed or clogged pad.
- Run a controlled filter cycle and listen to the pump while timing the oil return.
- With the fryer off, check the filter valve and its position switch.
- Review the controller settings that decide when FILTER appears.
- Replace the pump, valve or switch only after the cycle fails its check.
- Any filter cycle moves hot oil, so valve and pump work needs controlled conditions.
- The valve switch and pump motor are wired into live circuits behind the panels.
- Changing prompt settings without testing the cycle can hide a pump about to stop.

Can I keep frying while FILTER shows?
Yes, it is a reminder. Filter soon, because old oil breaks down faster.
Why does it return right after I clear it?
The control still thinks a filter is due. An unseated pan or a stalled cycle can leave it that way.
Can I filter on demand?
Yes. Hold SCAN and ENTER/EXIT FILTER for 3 seconds, and follow the maker's procedure.
